I am in the post production biz (audio)
Lately clients have been bringing me things on DVD that they wish to do audio posting on. I need some help in leaning how to convert a DVD to quicktime. I have both PC's and Mac's avalable to me.

In addition I am not totaly sure what format the DVD is so it would help if some one would define the the formats duing tthe rip and conversion. For example "you set the thingx setting to mpeg2?" or what ever..

Last I have searched the forums before I asked so I might not know enough to see the answer in front of my eyes.

Thanks in advance.:thanks:

hi and welcome to the forum,
if you want to know details about the structure of a dvd, just read through those guides: http://www.doom9.org/dvd-basics.htm

in short, the video on a dvd is always mpeg2 the audio can be in a number of formats, most comonly ac3 (dolby digital), pcm (uncompressed wav), dts and occasionally also mp2

to encode to quicktime either search the forum or take a look here:
http://www.apple.com/quicktime/tools_tips/encoding.html
or here for free tools:
http://developer.apple.com/quicktime/quicktimeintro/tools/

be aware though that most dvd ripping programs only work on a winbox - so either you limit yourself to win or you do some searching of the forum for mac methods - as i do not own a mac i've never really taken interest in encoding on it ;)

I need quicktime because I have to post in Protools.

Could you recomend a program for the ripping to preset it up for quicktime

I don't own a Mac, so I'm not able to try it - that said, this one looks like the Swiss Army Knife for encoding:

ffmpegX (http://homepage.mac.com/major4/)

I think its preset for MPEG4/MOV (uses ffmpeg) or XviD/MOV should be what you're looking for. It doesn't use Apple's own MPEG4-codec but it should be playable with Quicktime. I don't know whether you can just encode audio but you can choose uncomressed PCM for sound or Apple's AAC.
