Hi,
Is it possible to edit the resolution / aspect ratio of an AVI file (XviD) without re-encoding?
I know that MKV supports setting an aspect ratio flag (I think??) but I'm looking for something that work with an AVI file.
Does this exist?

no, you can't permanently change it withour reencoding, but you can change it on playback using bsplayer or a ds filter like ffdshow!

you can also change the aspect ratio of the mpeg-4 stream (divx5, xvid) with the mpeg4modifier (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=78050) tool
but note that this aspect ratio flag will not be used with .avi in directshow
for using it you have to mux the file into more advanced containers, like .mp4 or matroska (dunno about .ogm)

You can NOT change the resolution or Aspect of a AVI/MPG without re encoding it.
Any software that can encode videos will do what you want, you might want to look at MediaCoder (http://mediacoder.sourceforge.net/), there are various versions to suit different devices.
You should do more research and not revive such old threads, forums have search features for a reason.....

Well, you are right for the resolution, but actually you can change the aspect ratio without reencoding. For Divx/XVid you can use the MPEG4 Modifier mentioned above. If you use a directshow player like Media Player Classic, try ffdshow as deocder. This can recognize AspectRatio information.

Right you are...:)

Not all player's use the aspect information, so its not really a uniform approach to changing the aspect.
