I have a DVD player that will not play video CDs, and I have a lot of .avi files on my computer. Is there any way I can transform an .avi file into a file suitable to burn to a DVD that my player will play? And if so, how?
Thanks.

The simplest way is if you buy a new dvdplayer with .avi support.
The other way is you read one of the guides AVI -> DVD±R
Format conversion guides (http://www.doom9.org/conversionguides.htm)

There are also some dvd authoring apps out there that will allow you to import an avi and automatically re-encode it dvd compliant for you. I usually use this method when I am slapping together a demo project for someone and I don't really care about the visual quality.

this thread would be better placed in a forum dealing with dvd authoring... moving...

the dvd authoring program that most likely came bundled with your burner is capable of doing exactly this. Transform an avi to a mpeg2 dvd compliant file and even burn the outcome to a disk for you.
