View Full Version : Can I force ISO breakdown to 1GB files even on NTFS drive?

I read both this forum and the digital-digest, so I hope it's not considered cross-posting to ask the same question on 2 different websites. If so, :o :o sorry.

I have a fast computer with no DVD burner and a slow computer with a DVD burner (I know, I should just get a new computer

When I want to back up a disc, I'll generally do it on the fast computer, then copy the resulting files to my external USB drive and burn them from the slow computer (burns fine, just takes forever to rip a DVD).

Since the external drive is Fat32, I have always ripped to VOB files, though I would prefer to use ISO. The new feature to break up ISO into 1GB chunks is brilliant, and works great if I want to rip straight to the external drive. But the fast computer is an NTFs drive, and so if I rip ISO to the C:\ drive it goes as one large ISO which I cannot move to the Fat32 drive. Is there any way to force the FAT32-sized ISO chunks, even if ripping to an NTFS drive? If not, I'll just continue using VOBs, but *optionally* forcing 1GB files would make the ISO option PERFECT!

If you read in the changelog for DVD Shrink 3.2, it now splits ISOs and creates an MDS file that can be mounted with daemontools and burned with Decrypter! No need for Nero!

I know, I did read the changelog, and have been using this feature. But the changelog says:

Added automatic support for splitting ISO files if they are saved to a FAT32 partition. In this case a .MDS file is also output which can be burned with DVD Decrypter and mounted by Daemon Tools. MDS files can additionally be opened with DVD Shrink from the "Open Disc Image..." menu.

which means (I assume) that if you are ripping to an NTFS it will NOT split them and create an MDS, it will just make one large ISO file.

In my case, I am ripping them to an NTFS drive but will subsequently be moving them to a FAT32 drive. My question is can DVD Shrink split the ISO and make an MDS even when it is on an NTFS drive? i.e. even though the drive can handle a 5 GB file, I would like to have the smaller ISO chunks. Can I force the program to make them on an NTFS drive?

I know this does not technically answer the question you asked, but, if your external drive is USB 2.0, couldn't you just rip directly to that drive. Wouldn't Shrink recognise it as FAT32, and automatically split the file. It would also save the time of copying from one HD to another.

A good thought, but not feasible, for the same reason that I can't simply install the burner on the fast computer and be done with it. Namely, it's a relatively locked-down corporate machine, and in addition to not being able to install a DVD burner on it, I can't disable disk write caching. As a result of this caching, the drive every few days stops responding to the fast laptop. If this in in the middle (or heaven forbid) at the end of a backup, I'll lose everything that's been done.

I'd prefer just making the VOB files as I've been doing, rather than risk a bad cache breakdown during the session.

Thanks for the tip, though!

preferences | output files | split files into 1GB chunks

This you'll have to use the "hard disk" as the target location. Then can use ImgTool Classic to burn with dvddecrypter. Downside is it'll take an additonal 5 mins to create split .iso images and requires an extra 4.37GB of diskspace.

I know your asking to force it but I doubt you can looking at the registry
