View Full Version : Xvid --> Mpg / DVD conversion problem

I'm having a problem converting some Xvid movies to mpg or DVD.
Initially I couldn't even play the movies properly (they stuttered constantly). After looking on the forum I installed "ffdshow-20040718.exe".
This allowed me to play the videos fine in media player, but I still can't convert them properly. Using DVD2SVCD gives an error in Besweet (it carries on working on nothing forever), and just using TMpeg results in a video that isn't stuttering nearly as bad, but seems to be slightly slow, as if 20% of the frames are missing.
Any ideas? I'm guessing its a codec problem of some sort :(

The BeSweet error got nothing to do with XviD, the stuttering may come from false framerate (also nothing to do with XviD), but I'd rather let the experts in our Newbies section have a look at it.

Use VirtualDub to look at the properties of your avi. As said above you need to check the framerate. It needs to be the same as that of the dvd (dvd-project) you are creating. When the framerate changes because of this you can experience stutter.
Which is the framerate of avi and dvd ?

:logfile: all of them, dvd2svcd, besweet!
also open up your avi with gspot and tell us some details about your avi! framerate, kind of audio, codecs used, etc
from there on we can look for errors and fixes :)

WARNING! You seem to be using "Norton Unerase Protection" and
you want to delete the temporary files created by dvd2svcd.
This can cause DVD2SVCD problems. Even though DVD2SVCD deletes
the temporary files, Norton doesn't, therefore DVD2SVCD
might run into diskspace problems. I suggest that you stop the

Well I just tried to mess around with the video in VirtualDub and I've noticed something odd. When I click "Play input video" the same odd slightly-jerky video plays..
But when I play in Media player or PowerDVD it plays perfectly.. so what's the difference??
Could it have something to do with the decoder? I'm guessing it's using the Xvid decoder in VirtualDub, but Media Player etc.. is using the ffdshow one.. can I use the ffdshow to decode?

Hmm I might have solved it.. I removed ffdshow and the xvid codec and downloaded a new Xvid package.. seemed to encode one test clip ok (avi-->VCD). Will try a larger clip now :)
EDIT: Besweet still crashes in that weird way in DVD2SVCD, but Tmpeg seems to work fine on its own :)

This sticky
http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?threadid=51096
in the DVD2SVCD basic forum might be of use to you.
Try the trick with saving out of Virtual Dub.
If this doesn't help, reinstall ffdshow and try the trick with editing Avisynth.ini also in the sticky.
Hope this helps.
If not, let us know why not.
Cheers
Nick
