Hi I have been trying to backup Starsky & Hutch and have run into a problem. Everything goes fine thru the whole process and I'm even able to run and watch the dvd image on my computer. When I try to burn it to a dvd and play it on my sony dvd player, I get a "Dirty Disc Error". I was using DIF4U 1.4.7, ScenAid .27 and Scenarist 2.7. The weird thing is, is that if I use ReAuthorist to create the Scenarist script, and I go about making the DVD it WILL play in my dvd player (although the subs don't show up). So perhaps this is more of a ScenAid problem then anything else. It's not the media either b/c I used a DVD-RW and got the "dirty disc error" when using ScenAid and used the same disc when I was using ReAuthorist and it worked with ReAuthorist. Keep in mind that in all these cases the mounted DVD image plays fine on my computer. Thanks!

Angelus,

what program are you playing the 'image' on? have you tried playing through ifoedit to see if there were any errors?

at a guess i would say that the error is a result of a short no-cce cell at the beginning of play that is causing your standalone to give you a 'dirty disc error'(which most likely translates to a invalid navigation).
a couple of things you could do that might aid in troubleshooting would be to post your ifo layout and also a play order of the disc.

if you play the RW through ifoedit do you receive any errors?

did you strip any content from the disc?

cheers

I have just completed starsky & hutch, UK PAL retail version without any problems, and nothing unusual to set. Using DOIF4U 1.4.7, batchccews 0.9.1.5, scenaid .27, didnt use numenu4u on this one. All set on default (apart from 'use original palette' for subs in scenaid).

Hope this helps point to burning software or media.

Or you could try setting the first play item (using ifoedit) to 'jump to titleset menu, titleNr to 1, titlesetNr to 1 and menu to root (i think the menu is in VTS01, doing from memory), it should fire up the menu rather than a pre-select language choice then the trailers. it might skip any problems it has at begining of disk.

Software based dvd players are much more forgiving than your settop DVD player ever will be. I don't have much to go off of here, but it sounds to me like you may have had a problem in the ifoedit/ifoupdate stage. I would try getting VTS Sectors with ifoedit again.

Hi I have been mounting the image with Daemon Tools and then using PowerDVD to play the dvd's. I'm also able to play the mounted DVD image in Media Player Classic as well with no problems. I just tried playing it thru IfoEdit (by opening up the VIDEO_TS.ifo right?) and it said this:
Found filters for DirectX:
NVidia Audio Decoder, Overlay Mixer, NVidia Video Decoder, DVD Navigator.
After I click "Ok" it comes up with an error saying 2 out of the 3 Video streams failed to render properly. Here's the picture of the error:

After I click "Yes" it comes up with another dialog box saying, "Cannot get the IVideoWindow Interface. Sorry can't play DVD titles. Perhaps I need a different directshow filter. I get the same thing when I try to play the dvd-rw thru Ifoedit also. I didn't take anything out of the DVD and I even tried not removing the P-UP's in IfoEdit and it still had no effect. Also as a check I used Nero's recode last night to do the DVD and it played fine on my dvd player with the same DVD-RW and the subs showed up as well. Thanks.

@Chubmeister
How exactly would I do this? I haven't really used IfoEdit all that much. Thanks

Edit: What's the best way to post the IFO Layout and the player order for the DVD? By taking screenshots in Scenarist?

Glad you got it to play, it was a fair bet that burning software would make the diference.

Ahh, how to do the ifoedit thing, well, I've probably dropped myself in it as we don't like to change the original DVD structure in this DOITF4U etc forum, however, if you do a search for 2COOL's Cheat Sheets, you will find some information on how to do a great deal to your DVD's using ifoedit. But be warned, messing with the structure takes some time to get used to. Some of it is completely harmless while other things will work on one DVD and not on another. TBH I have forgotten exactly where I learnt all the little fiddles and I don't use many now thanks to the fantastic stability of the big three.

I have seen errors on software playback before and I think I was short of a filter or codec too.

angelus,
that error in ifoedit can be caused by not having the correct filters but it is usually the result (well for me anyway), that i currently have another application open that is using those filters - eg dvdshrink. so as soon as i close out of other applications and restart ifoedit, it is usually okay.

did you try ShaneZ's suggestion of 'Get VTS Sectors' in ifoedit?

as for posting the ifo layout, open the video_ts.ifo in ifoedit, select 'copy to clipboard' then paste into notepad etc.
for the play order, you can play the dvd in any software player that displays the title information as you play the dvd. personally i prefer using ifoedit. you will also need to note where the menu play is - eg, VMG etc

but first try ShaneZ's idea

Thanks ShaneZ and jel for your help! Sure enough after I opened up the VIDEO_TS.ifo file in IfoEdit and did the correct VTS sectors it found some errors and fixed them and now it will play in my dvd player!

One other problem though: The subs play fine on my computer but when I try to display them on the DVD player, they don't show up at all.

They seem to be imported fine into Scenarist and they do work if I play it on my computer. Any ideas what could be causing this?

no idea, sorry - could be a number of things (incorrect ifoupdate, etc)

you can check/alter the subtitle attributes in ifoedit though. check out ths guide by 2Cool to give you an idea about what to look for:
Correcting Menu Sub-Title Buttons After Stripping Unwanted Subtitle(s) (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=53420)

1) I'd recommend trying to start using BatchIFOUpdate over IFOUpdate. there will be new things coming soon with ScenAid and BathchIFOUpdate that will make your life easier in the long run

2) Best thing to do is to 1) Copy over the subcolors and 2) Copy Substream info

That guarantee what you see in Scenarist is what you'll see in the final...

I'm sorry but I don't quite understand what you mean. How am I supposed to do this? Sorry for not following :)

I just tried it over with those options checked using BatchIFOUpdate and the subs play fine on my computer but don't work on my standalone :(

Just as an update, I finally got the subtitles to work. I left all the subtitles checked in DIF4U and went thru the exact same process. Anyways I think DIF4U stripped out one of the English subtitles even though I had checked it. Weird but leaving all the subs made it work!
