you can use mencoder I think to repair the mpegs. I think you can use this syntax mencoder -idx filename -of mpeg -oac copy -ovc copy -o outputfilename. The documentation says that it works for avi but doesn't say anything for mpeg but since they don't keep their documentation updated, you can give that a try.

MPEG doesn't have an index so using mencoder like that will likely not work. What kind of problems are you having with the mpeg files?

Yup you are right. I tried it out the other day, and it did nothing. I too found out that some of my mpegs are damaged. Totem doesn't have a problem reading them but mplayer hangs. I think transcode can repair but don't qoute me. I need to read up their documentation some more.

Silly me cant remember what was the real problem.
I can only remember that some of the MPEGs didnt play properly, and mplayer was putting out some error message. Well, next time I will look more closely. :)

Now, all the mpg files seem to work.

I have some mpegs on a sony vaio (of my dad, running windows xp), which i dragged to another folder - and suddenly neither media player classic nor anyone else could play them (they were recorded using giga TV).

It tells there is no index to play them - but they dont have an index or?
I am thoroughly confused. THe data must still be there, its some files, like 4-8 gigs in size, and i wanted to compress them into an avi (xvid) to a size of about 1 gig. Now it cant be played back. I think I was trying to load them into TMPGenc on that windows machine but that also resulted in an error.

Another question though, what if i want to merge MPEGs?
I guess with MPEG2 it is not so easy because of license fees but how about MPEG1 files - merging and cutting them?

I found one of those damaged MPGs.
