Enough money to hire lawyers

The news section the other day had an interesting statement

"I guess if we paying customers had as much money to hire lawyers and buy off politicians the situation would be a tad bit different"

And I thought, individually we don't, but collectively we do. There are 57,605 members of this forum who are like minded people. If we put £10 each toward a fund for righting wrongs that would be over £500,000 which would hire some pretty good lawyers for a court case. Although I wouldn't really suggest we buy off politicians.

Has anyone ever done this, or is trying to do this? Would certainly make an interesting news story, the public fight back :)

it's cheaper/easier to have a politician in your pocket, than to win a court case; might be cheaper to hire an hitman (well... that's my opinion)

I think he means start a legal fund in case a member of the forum gets into some litigation.

Well a legal fund to fight things like bad legistlation, price fixing, anything that negatively effects the consumer, but the main point was that even a relatively small group of people can muster up enough cash to hire decent lawyers... although 50,000 is a pretty decent sized town, but still...

and those 50 000 are not even close to being realistic. even if there are something like 30 000 active forum members, in the terms that they visit the forum at least once a week (i don't know the exact figures so those are just numbers anyway) - it would be more than a little ambitious to expect more than 10% of them to actually put money in the fund unless there is a specific reason - like e.g. legal trouble for doom9 himself or one of the mods or devs!

anyway, i do not see anything like this happening, so i'd say this whole thread is a single 'what if' game ;)

The figure of the number of people on this forum was just an indicator, with a proper website and media backing there isn't any reason why it wouldn't work given half a chance. People putting up websites asking for money for no reason get plenty, so why shouldn't a website asking for money for a good cause succeed? Especially one that is controversial.

Most people don't donate for project usualy. For exemple, none did for realanime :(

There already are organizations trying to do this very thing. Although their website is very slow (maybe needs an equipment upgrade?) the Electronic Frontier Foundation (http://www.eff.org/) is one such group. There are probably others.

The EFF seem to disverse in their goals, someone needs to pick one topic it and hype it up till it explodes in the publics face. We should also consider miilitant action, it's relatively cheap to get some thugs drunk and go firebomb some corporate offices

Better would be to get Mark Thomas to make a show on the forums Favorite company. It would be quite amusing to see, say SONY for instance, having to provide all the expences for there top executives resident in the UK as they would have to under uk law to any UK shareholder.
