have you taken a look at the 'Big 3' - Doitfast4u, BatchCCEws, and reauthorist/scenaid? in combination with CCE they give a very powerfull set of tools which let's you choose what to keep and also returns way better quality! please keep in mind that the amount of knownledge and time needed to do a rip is inproportionally higher than with shrink/nero
dvddec is just a ripping tool, it let's you copy and decrypt DVDs to your hard drive! it's the recommended tool for dvd5 backups and ripping purposes but does not do any encoding/shrinking/reauthoring!

thanks for your info.can i get any of the tools you mentioned for free or do they have to be purchased?also are all three tools used together?thanks again for your help.
radar,
as a starting point you could cast your eyes over the excellent guides that doom9 has written on the 'big 3' method of back-up:
Scenarist NT & the big 3 new (http://www.doom9.org/index.html?/mpg/scenaid.htm) - using Scenaid to generate your script
&
Scenarist NT & the big 3 (http://www.doom9.org/index.html?/mpg/ra-guide.htm) - using ReAuthorist to generate the script
from these guides you will gain an understanding of the process and the tools needed.
you will also find that although the large percentage of tools used are freeware (written by other forum mods and users), unfortunately the encoding software (CCE- Cinema Craft Encoder) and the authoring software (Scenarist) are not.
cheers

i probably should have also mentioned that CCE and Scenarist are not only not free, but decently expensive - especially scenarist!
another possibility would be to strip unwanted extras, then create an iso to 'shrink' with dvdrebuilder (which does not allow the removing of extras right now)
edit: from todays news:
DVD Shrink 3.2 has a new, improved high quality transcoding engine, can replace titles with a still image, ... supports dual layer output
i haven't tried it myself, since i'm at work right now, but it should work that you use dvdshrink to remove the unwanted extras, make a dvd9 copy (in order to have no extra compression), create an iso, and then use dvdrebuilder to compress the dvd. the result should be the same as in dvdshrink concerning the functionality of the dvd and the quality of cce or another full scale mpeg2 encoder - used in dvdrebuilder. rejig, one of the encoders used in dvdrebuilder is free, so perhaps you'll want to give it a try. another possibility would be to use tmpegenc which is not free, but worlds cheaper than cce!
