If I know of a media with a specific manufacturer code that I wanted to buy, how would I figure out how to get it? Stores like newegg.com don't list the media code, so you never know what you are going to get until you check one of the discs? Is there a search engine to put in a media code and list back the stores that sell it?

I have never seen such a list. At Newegg you have to rely on the customer feedback to get the media code. Stores like Supermedia.com and Rima.com will often list the media code or will respond to an email request. I have gotten samples for no charge from Rima and I have had no trouble getting media codes from Supermedia. If you are bying "brand" names such as TDK or Memorex you are stuck as they just re-label someone elses discs and the media code is often different from one stack to the next. Even Ritek will sell Ricoh sometimes for there +R discs.
Videohelp.com has the most extensive listing of media codes I have seen and many times the poster will mention where they purchased.
