sides getting cut off

i've been converting avi's to dvd. and i just notcied when comparing image on computer to image on tv, that the sides of the video are getting cut off a little. anyone know why this is? tv thing?

i encode and author using tmpg

This is called overscan. Its actually a tv thing as u said. It happens with all the sets and it is about 10% of the image.

The reason this is happening eludes me now, but you can read about it if you search a little. It has been discussed before in this forum.
