CCE Basic: Anything like 1 Pass VBR?

I've just set up my own DVD authoring company and do not want to use any warez. This means that I'm using CCE Basic instead of CCE SP until I have the require cash. I have to admit that considering the program is so cheap, you're getting a hell of a good encoder.

In my old job we used CCE SP all of the time and there's just one difference between the two that I really miss - one pass VBR based on the Q value.

CCE Basic's two pass VBR is based on the average bitrate you specify. I'd much rather have a one pass VBR with a file size based on the Q value. Is there any way to achieve a similar effect in CCE Basic?

My understanding is that Basic can only do CBR or 2-pass VBR encodes. Looks like you'll have to save those pennies :(.

Maybe TMPGEnc would be a good choice (not the 3.0x but the 2.5x Plus branch), CQ mode is a good option.

The mainconcept encoder can do a single pass vbr and the results are pretty darn good.

I'll download the trial version and see how I get on. $150 for the software isn't so bad. I wish I had Premiere 6.5 instead of 6.0 though so I could get the $50 version :(
