This video/audio player and transcoder for Linux has been released in a new version after two years. It already supports a lot of different formats, and the developer will implement more on the encoder side, probably AAC with FAAC, too. You can discuss further developments in the SourceForge web forums, see its project page or the "Contact" link on the homepage.

Lots to say about it (i edited to make it shorter)

C language

Applications in gmerlin:
* Gmerlin player: multiformat media player with mediatree.
* Gmerlin alsamixer: Alsa mixer with support for multiple cards and detachable mixer controls.
* Camelot: webcam application
* Gmerlin visualizer: Run xmms visualization plugins without running xmms
* Plugin configurator: Configure gmerlin plugins for programs which can't do this themselves.

Gmerlin avdecoder:
Formats like Microsoft ASF/WMV/WMA/AVI, Real Media, Real Audio, Ogg Bitstream and more.

The main idea behind gmerlin seems to be that it uses a modular approach in order to keep flexibility for many different tasks. For example the developer is thinking about the future implementation of encoders at the moment and if he should rather use an own library like ffmpeg with very many codecs or rather support external single libraries like libfaac.
