View Full Version : Audio Loses Synch in Authored DVDRB output

I wasn't sure whether to post this in DVDRB or Authoring because I just discovered exactly what is happening. I am backing up a Queer As Folk: Complete First Season Volume 1 disc and half way through the second episode (the second episode is 1.5 hours long) the audio becomes out of synch with the video. I first discovered this with a burned copy on Memorex DVD+R media (I'm low on Ritek DVDRs), which works fine with every regular movie backup I have made.

I decided to research problem further, I still have all the output from all the programs I have used on this DVD on my computer. My process of creating the DVD was as follows:

1: DVD Shrink w/NO compression (I know I could have used Decryptor but I think it is basically the same thing)
I checked the output of this program from my computer, both using WinDVD and DVD Shrink's preview, and there is no synch problem.

2: I then used DVDRB to process the DVD Shrink output. I use CCE 2.67.0.9 with the ECLcce.exe and AVISynth and the Mpeg2dec3.dll. I believe all of that is setup correctly as per the Doom9 guide to settings. I used the One-Click mode after setting everything up.
I tested the output of DVDRB and to my surprise it appears to be flawless. It created a 4.34GB VIDEO_TS folder and I could not find any audio synch problems. By the way, the audio synch problems I found when testing in my standalone always occurred in the same place and in the same way.

3: I re-authored the DVDRB output (which was only the 3 episode tracks) using TMPGenc Author. I created very simple menus with a few 800x600 jpegs and then processed it.
I tested the output of TMPGenc Author and IT CONTAINS the problems. The TMPGenc Author output exhibits the exact same problems as those I had with the burned disc, and I burned the TMPGenc Author output. Also, TMPGenc creates a 4.23GB VIDEO_TS directory, smaller than the DVDRB's outputted VIDEO_TS.

If anyone could help me sort this problem out I would appreciate it. I guess it isn't exactly a problem with DVDRB but I am new to both programs; this is my first Episodic DVD to be backed up but I have backed up many normal movie discs with great success. Also, I don't know what TMPGenc Author is doing (it takes about 30 minutes for it to process) so I don't know if it is causing the problem or what. Thanks.

I know there are ways to try to "resynch," the current out put but I just wanted to reiterate that I want to fix this so it does not happen with other backups, or basically figure out whats going wrong. Also, for what its worth I think the reason the file sizes are different is because when I use DVD Author I preserve the 2-Channel audio and not the 6-Channel, although I have not check this. Thanks again.

I keep editing but I think I have pinpointed the problem even further. The audio synch problems seems to only happen on track 2 (the 1.5 hour episode). So, I opened the VIDEO_TS folder or the DVDRB Output and the VIDEO_TS folder of the final TMPG Author output, and compared the "recording time" of both 'DVDs." The first and third tracks of both outputs match exactly BUT the DVDRB output's Track 2 is 1hr26min48secs while the TMPG Author's track 2 1hr26min47secs. When the audio begins to be out of synch in track 2 (which is about half way through) it does seem to only be about 1 second.

I guess this means nothing is wrong with DVDRB (actually it seems like it is a fantastic program) but my question is why is this happening and how can I correct it? I don't know why TMPG Author is chopping up my video ... I have repeated the author process twice, keeping all the variables the same, and the same exact results occur.

I tried this again with another transcode, this time I have set DVDRB to do 3 total passes (1 vaf and 2 CCE). I also did not realize that the DVD was too large after I added my menus (before I made the menus then processed with DVDRB) so I made a pass with DVD Shrink, I know this would normally affect the quality but it was only very minor compression to shrink it about 50 megs. After that I ran TMPGEnc Author on the Shrink output and I pretty much get the same problem but the audio sync problem was more prevalent in all of the tracks than I realized. So I tested agagin;

I watched the TMPGEnc Author output on a software DVD player and found sync problems. I ran the original DVDRB output through the player and could not notice any problems, I checked the same frames etc and I also checked the DVD Shrink output (which processed the actual DVDRB output) and could not notice any problems. So I fear I may have posted in the wrong forum but I still have this very strange issue, if anyone is willing to help. I know something is happening that is not entirely the problem of TMPGEnc author because if I view the uncompressed vobs through TMPGEnc Author's viewer then there are no sync problems but the viewer notices these problems. What does TMPGEnc do the DVDRB output and if so is there a problem with how I am using DVDRB? Thanks to anyone who has sat through my long posts.

... maybe this is nothing but like I said I know very little and this seemed like it was pointing to something. Again if anyone could help me out or point me in the right direction I'd appreciate it.
