View Full Version : Sector Errors on DVD
I have a DVD that I wish to back up. It plays fine, both on hardware players, and on software players like WinDVD.
However, when I try to back it up with DVDShrink, after backing up most of the film, near the end it aborts with "sector not found" error messages.
I tried decrypting it to disk first with DVDDecrypter, and had the same problem.
I cleaned the disk, re-booted the computer (no background programs running), tried everything, cannot back-up this disc.
There obviously must be some sector errors, but if they are not bad enough to affect playback, why should they be so difficult for these copy programs to deal with?
Any suggestions?

Nothing you can do...at this point if cleaning fails (which it did in this paticular case)...get a new DVD. This is the whole reason to backup your new DVDs as soon as you purchase them.

But the DVD in question plays back fine, without error, although when one tries to rip it there are numerous "sector not found" messages.
Could this be some new kind of copy protection, that masquerades as errors on the disc?

Make sure you have the latest DVDDecrypter
Just a suggestion

Yes, there is a "new" kind of copy protection.
They encode a vob cell with fictive sector numbers in the stream, but the cell before has a cell command that jumps over the bad cell! That's why the player plays the title, but the copyer hangs.
Search the bad cell and disable it in DVD Decrypter (ifo mode).
Then copy and use IfoEdit for editing to play.
Latest example:
Revolution Studios, The Missing, DVD PAL 2 -> cell 3

If the disc is scratched, try some Brasso metal polisher on it.

Hi, i am also experiencing the same problem with my NTSC Oldboy(2003)dvd. I cant figure out any way to rip it. (yes the dvd is in perfect condition) Dvdshrink wont finish analyzing the disc at 78% (crc error) and dvd decryptor wont rip it either in file mode, ifo mode and iso mode. the dvd isnt even css encrypted. I have struggled for hours and looked for help on many different forums such as dvdrhelp, cdfreaks, etc and yet to no avail.I cant find any solution that works. one solution that actually sort of worked was deleting cell 12, and 13 and ripping it in ifo mode, but i dont know how to put the ifo pieces together. and i noticed that the layer break on the dvd was on cell 13 with duration of 5:31, which would mean that i have a part of the movie missing.
Can anyone please help me?, your help will be greatly appreciated

even with aa few sectors bad a DVD will play on a DVD standalone recorder. It just skips the bad errors and jumps to the the next good one. If there are only a few bad sectors then you will harly notice it as they contain only a few ms of video.
You can set DVDdecrypter to ignore read errors. Most of the DVD's with bad sectors can then be ripped. DVDdecrypter will show were the bad sectors are and just continu with trying to read the next one. If there are many bad sectors then it can take quite some time to rip the DVD.
After ripping You have to load the ifo set in IFOedit and use the get VTS sectors option to get vts pointers corrected for missing sectors as ripped files will be shorter then the original ones.

I think this thread is very interesting for me. Till now I had no problems backing up DVDs with DVD-Decrypter. But yesterday i tried to backup "Gothika" (Pal R2). The ISO-creating with decrypter failed showing me read-errors. I controlled the DVD but i found no scratches. So i tried a backup by file.
I found three files on the dvd (vts_06_2, vts_07_1, vts_08_1) containing unreadable sectors.
Ahaaaaaaaaaaaaaa. This DVD is copy protected containing cells with unreadable sectors similar copy protection on Computer-GAME-CDs.
I wasn`t able to locate the protected cells. I tried to open the DVD with Decrypter in IFO-mode, but decrypter freezes. So i have no chance to locate and disable the protected cells till now.
Opening with DVD-Shrink (Full disc mode) or in Instantcopy fails with an error message.
DVD-Shrink (reauthor mode) opens the DVD, but didn't show the main-movie in the "Main-Movie-Section". There are only the 2 biggest "Extras" visible.
Backing up the files with "ignore read errors" checked (DVD-Decrypter) is possible, but lasts for hours.
Is there another possibility to locate/disable the "bad" cells???

Use IfoEdit and you can locate the cells from that VOBs.
Then use DVD-Decrypter and deactivate the protected cells.

Strange because I did backup Gothika PAL R2 just fine. Made ISO with DVD decryptor without any problem. Think you have a damaged disk.

I can confirm that Gothika PAL R2 is using the new copy protection method. With Ifoedit it is easy locate the VOB-ID / CELL-IDs in VTS7 which are ponjting to the unreadable sectors. Nevertheless both Smartripper 2.40 and DVDDecrypter 3.2.3.0 are unable to read the DVD in IFO mode. Possibly there are some manipulations in the IFO files which prevents both programs to parse the IFO files correctly.
Nevertheless "VStrip 0.8f_CSS", available here: http://www.doom9.org/Soft21/Rippers/vStrip_08f_css.zip , is able to parse this DVD and to rip the movie after disabling the corrupted cells.
The source of vstrip is available under http://www.maven.de/code/vStrip.zip. That is the source of a version without CSS decryption, but it may help Lightning UK! to figure out why DVDDecrypter can not parse this DVD.

Thanks for your comment Nanobot. Have you the possibility to give me a short explain how to find the Bad cells in IFO-Edit !!!!
I use IFO-Edit for a long time, but I've never searched with it for single cell!
Thanks!!

I found and fixed this problem ages ago when I finally managed to get hold of a protected disc.
I'll be releasing a new version soon so just wait for that.

Here's the solution for all people who don't wanna wait for a new version of DVD-Decrypter.
An so read my way to make a backup of "GOTHIKA" (PAL R2):
First I installed "AnyDVD" to decrypt CSS.
Second i mounted the DVD into VOBblanker 1.4.0.1
You remember: unreadable cells are in VTS 6, 7 and 8. VTS 7 is the main-video.
I prefer keeping only the main-video and the menue to get the highest bitrate possible.
So i blanked out the vts's 5-6 and 8-19. Further i cut out (prev/cut function in Vobblanker) the cells 1-3 from vts 7 (Main-video).
After processing (lasts 10 minutes), the dvd-folder was around 4300 mb, with working menu.
And, it is really unbelievable, the processed folder is readable with DVD-Shrink!!!!!
So i think, that Vobblanker has corrected the ifos.
Now i try this method with "The Missing" (PAL R2) which contains unreadable cells in the main-vts.
Good luck

The method works also with "The Missing" -)

@LIGHTNING UK:
Is the problem supposed to be fixed in the new version?
I installed the new DVD Decrypter, but it still doesn't work for me.
THX!
EDIT:
I have to correct myself.
After setting the structure protection removal mode to AGGRESSIVE (yeah!) it worked fine, i.e. DVD Shrink can now read the files and even the ripping speed improved. Tried it w/ the aforementioned THE MISSING so far.
I have a question though. Is there any risk in keeping the AGGRESSIVE MODE as my default setting, i.e. using it on disks that do not require it?

It's much better to leave it on 'Normal'.
Aggressive doesnt even attempt to read the suspect areas, Normal does.
Maybe you've just got a really crappy drive that cant read past even 1 error. I tried a handful of drives and they all read the first bad sector within 30 - 60 seconds before 'dummy' filling. So basically, just wait for it to do its thing! If Aggressive works, so should 'Normal'. You just might have to give it a little while longer.

This is perfect! Good Job!
Might become the ultimate solution for that sort of copy protection.
Thank You
