4X Media On The Way?

Meanwhile, Pioneer Europe has announced a new drive that can write to double-layer DVD+R media at 4X speed. That's nearly twice as fast as the existing drives. Double-layer 4X DVD+R media is not yet available, although Clatterbuck does not expect it to be any more difficult to make than the existing media.

"It's not a big leap in manufacturing terms to go from 2.4X to 4X," he says. What's that? The Pioneer A08 will write some 2,4x DL media at 4x...no need to get headache about 4x media.

Yep, that will be my next drive to purchase without doubt!

4x DL on 2.4x media is just great even if they cost a fortune...
Works on MKM 001 media, read here: http://pc.watch.impress.co.jp/docs/2004/0715/dvddl.htm

16x is not really important that cause it's Z-CLV and compared to CAV or P-CAV... nah, LOL.

I hope the writing quality will stay as high as with the DVR-107 models!!

Next step seems to be 8x on ±RW media and maybe -DL ...

some burners can also write 16x or 12x on 8x media.. that doesn't mean writing quality gets any better if you write faster on a disc than you're supposed to. most of todays 8x discs can't even be written to at 8x if you want a resulting disc that stays within the specs.

I doubt that Pioneer will allow to write crap discs at 16x or 4x...

No, now go back and carefully read the exact wording of the article. Absolutely nowhere did it say what you are implying. The manufacturer of the media said that to move the PRODUCTION process of the media from 2.4x to 4x was not too big a step.

As always the devil is in the details - if you bother to actually read them that is.
