View Full Version : single ac3 channel extraction?

Are there any editing programs for AC3 that let you extract a single stream for editing, then reinsert the changed stream back into the original file? I want to edit the center channel without degrading the other channels by converting everything to wavs and then reencoding to ac3 after editing.

I'm working on creating a perfect addition of a recent mainstream movie that should have been cool, but is really the worst movie I've ever seen (use your imagination, any guesses?)

Basically I want to silence some of the dialogue because the script is horrible and the performances are pathetic. This movie must've been shot Ed Wood style. I will be blanking the center channel stream in some spots where you can't see characters actually speaking to improve the movie.

Thanks for any help

I, too, would be interested in this. I want to mute the sheer amount of F*($'s in Poolhall Junkies (another excellent movie destroyed by cussing). I have a similar (albeit more total process oriented) thread in the dvd authoring forum (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=79851). I will post if I hear something.

If you have both Nuendo & the Nuendo Dolby Digital Encoder, then you can do this easily.
Simply import the multichannel AC3 file into a new project, and the Decoder will split it down into the 6 WAV files.
Edit as required, and re encode afterwards.
When you import the original, you get a little text describing all the original metadata settings that were used.

I think BeSweet (maybe with BeSure gui) can output multiple wav's using dts-cd output. I haven't tested, yet, but that's what the program says it does.
I'm not sure how I would re-make a single multichannel ac3 file from those wav's after the fact and then import that file into the dvd, though.

Ummm...
Any options that don't cost $2500?
Hehehe...
I think BeSure is working, using dts-cd, but it's forcing 44.100khz as it's fixed in the frontend. I tried dts-cd through BeSweet, but it stopped, because I didn't have SurCode CD.
I've found quite a few ways to rip a single multichannel ac3 file, but still haven't figured out multiple wavs at 48000khz.

You can use EditGraph and AC3Filter.
Using sliders from AC3Filter for voice you can attenuate those places where required during playback, at the same time your new AC3 audio is recorded. /easy and free/

So, with ac3filter, would you rip a single multichannel ac3 file to the hard drive and then open it within ac3filter (I thought it was just a decoder, like a .ax file, not a program)?

Using this way there is not neccesity to seperate the channels.
Run EditGraph program and render your audio AC3 track.Break connection after decoder and put in AC3Filter, take a look for this graph http://img20.exs.cx/img20/4004/mp22AC3.jpg
In the mixer section you will find sliders for voice , surround and others

I figured out how to do it with BeSweet. I used BeSweet Gui to get the command line and then edited the command line. I just tested the wavs and they are 48000 and the center is all dialog, etc...
"C:\Program Files\BeSweetv1.5b29\BeSweet.exe" -core( -input "g:\POOLHALL_JUNKIES\VIDEO_TS\VTS_01_1.VOB" -output "g:\POOLHALL_JUNKIES" -substream 0x80 -6ch -logfile "C:\Program Files\BeSweetGUIv0.7b4\BeSweet.log" )
I assume that you could leave out the logfile part, if you wanted.
Next is to edit the dialog, get it back to ac3, and figure out how to put it all back together.
