Idea : Great Filter Shootout

I have been reading these boards off and on for sometime, getting people's opinions and information. I think it's time I gave something back.

My idea: There are many filters out there that do the same thing (mainly noise removal). I was thinking of a way to see which one is the best.

1) Take a source clip that is very clean.
2) Add stuff like noise, rainbowing, and pretty much anything I can think of.
3) Test each filter out on the altered clip.
4) Use something like psnr to compare the filtered clip to the original.

That's pretty much all I have right now. I just wanted to know if this was a good idea, or are my concepts fndimentally flawed.

I think its nice to see a comparison of filters. The problem with saying one is best is that people's need varies widely and their goal similarly varies.

Your idea to objectively review the differences with psnr is fair, but keep in mind that often times that does not indicate which is subjectively better for the majority of users or the average user. It simply measures the difference from the original. And often times filtering poor sources will almost always deviate from the original significantly.

One more thing. How do you plan on "adding" noise, rainbows? Perhaps by encoding it (aka quantizing the video at low bitrate) to generate noise? I think rainbows come from analog sources, so it may be hard to generate that and have an original one without the rainbow artifacts?
