5 days for new users to post or reply?

You guys are on crack. Make people go through the process to register and then have to wait 5 days to get an answer to a question!?!?! Most people want the answer now not five days from now. I am really not slamming you guys. You are shooting yourself in the foot here. If I didn't somehow remember my password (took about 10 tries) I would have went to another forum and never returned here.

I believe it is explained quite well... one reason is so that people might use search to get their answer.

Most people want the answer now not five days from now.

Then they can a. search the forum or use google or b. go to another forum where no such restriction exists

Not remembering your password is kinda lame. What if someone answered and you had an additional question but forgot your password?

As you can see I have 18 post since March of 2002. I don't log into the forums often. Not hard to forget a password then. To be honest it's been so long since I have logged in I almost forgot what user name I signed up with. Also the email address I used is no longer valid so I couldn't have my password sent to me. After the fifth time of using the wrong password I said screw it and registered again. I had a quick question that I did search on (and not just here) but found no answer.

I understand that. That also assumes everyone that signs up here is dumb. Maybe if it was a one day wait I wouldn't find it so strange. Five days makes it seems like the knowledge learned here is dangerous and need a cool down period like when you buy a gun. :)

I'm not really upset. I just find this rule strange. I'm not denying doom9 as one of the biggest forums around. Just voicing my opinion that this could drive some new members away. Because someone may be a new member doesn't mean they are clueless when it come to the topic these forums are for.

This post is my opinion and not meant to offend anyone that runs these forums, so don't get upset. I just wanted to see the reasoning behind it all. You guys should add this restriction to the rules or somewhere easy to find so people that sign up know why.

I tell you what it taught me. to search. when I post its something serious or actually constructive and its clean. not many forums this big that is based on virtually nothing but GOOD content.

So the whole issue here is not the 5-day waiting itself but the fact that you forgot the password and decided to register again. With all due respect, this isn't a paid tech support hence it's likely that no one would miss you. On the other hand, if you were to post a guide or something else useful for the others, it could wait five days since it's not an emergency yet a valuable contribution to the community.

Maybe if you frequented this site more often you wouldn't have forgotten. That way you get something for giving something, and not make this simply a place that you visit for a quick answer and then leave till the next time you have another question. That way everyone benefits.

hehe. i was mildly surprised when i first signed up... but then i realised that if i'd read the rules before i registered i'd have known that i couldn't post..

so it made me read the rules before i had the chance to unknowingly break them.

anyway, a simple speed-bump like that has made this possibly the least trolled site in this field. that says something i think. if it's a little harder to sign up, it isn't worth a troll's while joining up (there's a couple of exceptions of course), and so there's far less useless flamage on this forum.

of course, it's a mild inconvenience if you've got a deadline. that's when search comes in handy 90% of the time. of course, there are some questions left that haven't been asked (or answered). the small sacrifice is worth it in my opinion. there are other ways to filter trolls, but most of those involve violating our privacy as well (like logging personal information when you register). a simple "speed bump" is just as effective and doesn't violate user's privacy.
