I've got severe problems with Verbatim 8x DVD-R media on old dvd-rom drives. The Pioneer DVD-115 can't read it (no matter whether it's recorded on a Plextor 708 or an LG 4120B or at 4x or 6x or 8x), and the Toshiba 1502 also refused to work. The Toshiba 1612 can read it, but has some spindown issues.
Now the 1712 shows a flawless read curse (http://www-user.tu-chemnitz.de/~noe/CDF/DVDSpeeds/Toshi1712Rd/Mitsubishi_8x_-R/read_LG_w8.gif), meaning that the recording quality can't be bad. There must be something wrong with the type of media. I can't find other 8x DVD-R media here, so I can't try Taiyo Yuden :(

Does anyone else besides me have similar problems with 8x dvd-r media on old reading devices?

That's interesting but not good.

I've the Toshiba 1612, 1712 and 1802 and the only problems I've found so far are with really oversized CD's and DVD's with the DVD-ROM Booktype set.

I've used these:
Platinum DVD-R 8x Speed

Media Information:
Media code/Manufacturer ID RITEKG05
Format Capacity Not Formatted
Free Blocks 411107328
Free Capacity 4.38GB(4.71GB)
Book Type DVD-R
Media Type DVD-R
Available Write Descriptor CLV 8.0x 11080KBps
Available Write Descriptor CLV 6.0x 8310KBps
Available Write Descriptor CLV 4.0x 5540KBps
Available Write Descriptor CLV 2.0x 2770KBps
Available Write Descriptor CLV 1.0x 1385KBps

and they work ok.

OK, the Pioneer 115 works now (a bit):

Verbatim 8x -R @ 4x in LG 4120: 34 reties, but no error
Verbatim 8x -R @ 8x in LG 4120: severe spindown issues, but no retries
Verbatim 8x -R @ 4x in Plextor 708: read error...

In Nero DVD Speed, all those discs report tracking errors or uncorrectable read errors in that pioneer drive, but appearently retrying a bit is enough to resolve it for the LG-recorded ones.

BTW, That LG only reports 4x and 8x as possible speeds for those discs. On 8x +R media, it also only reports 4x, 8x, and in the case of taiyo yuden, 12x.

It's really funny that the Toshiba 1712 can read those discs at 17x CAV :o The burner itself reads them at 10x CAV (its max speed for dvd+-r), also without any spindown.

Maybe you can find someone with a toshiba 1502 or an old pioneer drive to check your discs?

Maybe someone with an old Pioneer but probably none with a Toshi 1502...

I guess you know that Princo is again under suspicion of misusing Manuf IDs? ;) Now I wonder where that price comes from, if it is really TY media :o
