i would like to know if there is an app which could alter an iso dvd image in such a way that the last sector was bad intentionally. thus protecting the disc from the casual nero copy. i know there are apps that do this for cdrs so i wondered if there was something similar or could i use one of those?

There is no (easy & inexpensive) way to protect such content.
If the player/drive can read it it's copyable.

You might consider burning on Princo discs :D - usually they are so crappy towards the end that you will never be able to copy it back - a standalone might still be able to get past the unreadable bits.

If the MPAA and their millions of dollars can't do it, why do you think that you can??

I can't imagine why anyone would want to prevent copying home videos??? seriously i don't see any way to do this. even if you have the expensive hardware to make disks with css protection, that was cracked a while ago.

CSS encryption is horribly expensive (thousands of $ for one title) and you get absolutely nothing for the money. It's a joke, really :D :D

look on the underside of the recorded disk
see where the recording ends
put a great big scratch on the end of the recorded part.

With a scratch in the recorded area, I think chances are that no DVD Player will be able to play that part (at least not without visual errors) but good DVD drives will still be able to read it well.
At least that's my experience with a Pioneer DVD A06 drive - it reads everything perfectly, no matter how scratched it is (there's no point to test DVDs and CDs with Nero CD Speed anymore because this drive shows only perfect surface-scan quality for everything thrown at it...)

Adobe Encore DVD (http://www.adobe.com/products/encore/main.html) can add CSS and APS encryption. For around $550, might be what your looking for.

That's not the way things go ...
Even if you are a legal owner of Sonic Scenarist and do have a dvd burner which is able to burn dvd authoring discs you are not able to burn CSS encrypted dvds at home.
And CSS prevents noone from copying since years ...
But there are ways to make simple copying a nightmare and reauthoring, too.
Shrinking/stripping also does not work the way it should normally :p
But my mouth is sealed :D

The Encore help file says you are able to burn CSS encrypted DVDs without even licencing (while it says Macrovision needs licencing). Whatever, not even professionally made CSS DVDs are well protected...

Of course, but only with Authoring burner & media.
And where does your CSS encryption key come from?
Encore would be a highly illegal software if that would really work. So forget it because Adobe never would do that.
For Scenarist f.e. you have to give your dvd and your title sets a random number, fill it into a form and send it to Matsushita.
Then you will get a key disk and will see an unlocked 'from CSS' in Scenarist and are able to burn that disc with dvd authoring burner and authoring discs.
