We are currently plugging back our 56k modem and reinstalling Windows for Workgroups 3.11 server to get it ready for the launch, everything should be live in 30min...

On my system ( win XP ), the loading of the 'select video compression' page in virtual dub mod 1.5.4.1, and after clicking on DivX 5.2.0, I have a freeze during 3 seconds, then I get back the hand.

I'll post further comment after the end of the encoding.

hm i would be interested if divx5.2 handles more than 1 b-frames in a row exactly the same way as xvid?

Happens here too (Win2k)

We noticed this a little too, but it would have delayed the 5.2 release more if we had waited to fix it.

Keep the feedback comming, we'll get on it :)

Hi,

system freezes completly when trying to return after setting nth-pass using vdubmod 1.5.10.1 (2439)

using gknot (standard settings, 3-pass, fast, fast, slowest, i sometimes get the following error after the first pass:
"this video-format can't be used" - this error is not reproduceable.

All right, first test finished. I encoded a 12 minutes long extract of Amelie ( PAL, french movie ), 704x416 ( anamorphic ). No prefiltering and slowest settings possible for DivX ( at least, I hope ).

Framerate was not bad ( 8 fps, against 12 for XviD without gmc & qpel, but with VHQ 4, treillis and b-frames ).

However, if quality on very low motion scenes was as good as expected, on a few scenes, there are blocks of noise very annoying. They keep appearing / disappearing, which makes them visible. I don't know if it's psychovisual enhancements which are doing this. It's on P-frames, but since they are reference frames for b-frames, the noise is also present on b-frames.

I guess film effect would get rid of it, of course, but I'm looking at it with vdub. I'll post a comparison with XviD when this other encode will be finished.

It also seems that the vfw decoder filter is able to make post processing ( deblocking, perhaps deringing, but not noise ? ) because the output is far less blocky than ffdshow without postprocessing, in MPC.

Also, I'm watching it on a LCD ( but zones affected are not overly bright nor dark ).

Which version do you have installed, registered or 6 month trial?

Well would you bloody believe it!

They've dropped packed bitstream when generating multiple B-VOP encodes but kept it when generating 1B-VOP encodes!

What's the deal with this I wonder?

And mB-VOP does not work flawlessly with my Xcard but it still works better than XviD B-VOP.

Streams mux ok into the mp4 container.

Maybe they want to make sure that multiple bframes are playable with already DivX certified mediatek based players..... ;)

We believe packed bitstream is the right thing to do when in VfW/AVI architecture, for several reasons:

- Seeking is off when using B frames and unpacked bitstream, this is rely annoying when seeking in a player or even worse in an editing application.
- Audio delay, unpacked bitstream will introduce an audio delay multiple of the # of B frames.

Even thought the multiple B frames feature is not part of the DivX Certified Home Theater Profile, we use unpacked bitstream to ensure maximum hardware player compatibility.

Back to B-VOP.

I've just generated some more tests using your 'Adaptive Multiple Consecutive' setting (which I've nic-named mB-VOP).

As we now know, unlike the 'Adaptive Single Consecutive' setting (maybe we could call this sB-VOP), mB-VOP does not use packed bitstream.

Anyway, when I play the AVI in hardware (via Xcard) it's a bit jerky, like there's a few dropped frames.

When I use mp4UI to mux the AVI stream into an MP4 container, playback is the same as the AVI. However, if I use GraphEdit and 3ivx muxer to generate an MP4, playback via Xcard is perfect.... "which is nice!"

Can you guys provide some information regarding how both your B-VOP implementations differ from XviD's or Nero's please?

Cheers

These powerful encoding tools let you produce studio-quality video, with higher quality and compression than can be achieved with Windows Media 9.

IMHO:... visually WMV9/XviD are better ... and RV10/VP6 very better

PSNR overall, PSNR Average, SSIM and VQM: WMV9/XviD are better and RV10/VP6 very better

If you want to convince somebody made a serious test (http://jfl1974.free.fr/HTM/32_Test_Codec_Video.htm) ... it's useless to say not proven assertions ...
