In terms of compatability with DVD +R backups of movies, which standalone player is best? I'm in the market for a new player.

For a start, try vcdhelp.com for media compatibilities of particular players. Pretty much any recent player should support dvd+r and dvd-r ... also, it is kinda hard to give an answer - e.g. where do you live, what would you want to spend etc.
There is also a different forum (hardware players) which would probably get you more answers.
Last, but not least, the "what's the best"-type questions are hard, if not impossible, to answer ...

Thanks for your response. I have just had some friends that weren't able to play backups on their players. Also, my old Apex (with the backdoor menu) tends to have some problems with skipping for some of my backups. So, best would be the cheapest that will play my backups. BTW, I live in the US. Anyway, thanks for your help.

Better luck with -R's, my relatively new JVC will not handle +R.

Apex doesn't play +R discs unless you can use a bitsetter software to change the book type of the disc.
Memorex Do.
Here's (http://www.sears.com/sr/javasr/product.do?BV_UseBVCookie=Yes&vertical=ELEC&pid=05757154000&vertical=ELEC&com.broadvision.session.new=Yes) one selling at Sears, and it read all the discs I have (+R,-R,+RW,-RW).
