I normally use dvdshrink or dvdrb+cce for my dvd copies. One question. I'm after a fast way of checking my dvds after they have been burnt. Think chkdsk for dvds. I've had a few bad disks lately so I would to verify the disk is ok after burning. No - I don't have time to watch the whole movie ! Thanks in advance

from memory doesnt nero and dvddecrypter both have verify options for after burn ?

so you could use the iso output from dvdshrink as your burning source and maybe imgtool to make an iso for burning from DVD-RB.

I personally check ALL my burned DVDs, already got too many "surprises".

But it's only a partial verification, I'm just copying the LAST file (usually VTS_01_5.VOB) back on my hard drive. Because DVDs often fails in that area except if you use high quality media.

DVDInfoPro is what you need.

I believe that the verify cycle on these programs will flag the verify as failed if ANY glitch occurs. When you actually play the disk, the player will attempt a retry on the detection of a failure, so it may not be apparent that a "failure" has actually occurred.

I've found that, for me, if the disk fails the verify cycle after burning, there is SOMETHING wrong with the disk. It might play fine, only to die later, or it may stutter/pause briefly while playing. So, I toss it out if it fails verify because I figure eventually it will come back to bite me.

Thanks for that. Still takes a while to check each disk. Any ideas on something that takes < 1min. How about loading into dvdshrink ?

Copying the last file is the fastest method , and take less than a minute.

There is no complete check unless you copy the whole dvd back to the HD.

Or you could bite the bullet and buy decent dvd-r's and not really have to worry about it too much... I found a 25 disc spindle of Memorex dvd-r 4x discs for like 29 dollars.. that aint bad at all and i havent had a problem with them yet.

I use the DVD read error test option in DVDInfoPro.

I always use the verify option in Nero and throw the disc away if it fails. A serious verification that takes less time than it would to read the disc is not possible.

I have had discs that has failed the verification but, still plays 100% in a player. It also copies the files to the computer fine as well.

The discs were memorex +RW's. An interesting thing I noticed, was if I used DVDInfoPro to format the disc prior to burning with Nero, the verification passed.

I check ALL my backups playing 'em into the stand alone player, jumping one by one all the chapters...

I check mine by fast forwarding. If there is a problem, the picture will freeze or pixelate just like it would normally.

I verify all the backups I do with ImgBrn. Out of about 20 iterations, I haven't had one not verify. It only takes about 15 minutes to verify so I like to do it, but since I've never had one not verify, I wonder if I can skip this step if I want to save some time.

If you are really curious, you should actually do a complete PIE/etc. scan. What good is it, if it read today but not tomorrow? If the scan shows significant errors, perhaps changing media and speed might be a good idea.
