View Full Version : Help merging 2 sets of Vob's ?
nightrhyme
8th July 2004, 19:27
Just bought Godfather 2 which is on 2 disk's. Disk 1 = 2 hour 10 min, Disk 2 = 1 hour and some minuts. I want to make AutoGK think of the VOBS from both disk's as one DVD, so I would be able to encode the whole thing in the same quality. I guess I have to rename the VOBS from second disc and edit the ifo file to allow continuous playback of all VOBS. Can anyone help me to accomplish this ?
Thanx in advance :-)

this should help you join both sets of VOB's and maintain chapters etc

Thanx for reply.
Found that guide too just after posting but I'm having some trouble locating the VOB ID mentioned in
* Joining double sided DVDs *
in this line
So load VTS_01_4.VOB of side A into VobEdit, and scroll down to the last Navigation Pack. The last VOB-ID in that case is VOB-ID Nr: 2
No matter which Vob file I open only Vob "file 1" is mentioned in the Navigation Pack. It reads like this :
and that is no matter which Vob I open and no matter which Navigation Pack entry I read.
Any info on this ?
As I'm writing this I'm trying to use the first part of the guide. See if I can make that part work :-)
MackemX
8th July 2004, 21:21
chances are the whole of the first movie DVD will be VOB ID 1
this will mean VOB ID 2 will be your starting point and it will join the 2 together :)

Thanx so much for helping a Noob like me :-)
As seen on the image this is the last entry I could find for Navigation Pack in the last Vob of the first Disk.
Does this mean Vob ID:1 ?
http://img23.exs.cx/img23/6026/vob.jpg
Gonna try this again since I wasn't able to make the first part of the guide work :-(
MackemX

thats exactly it :) so the VOB ID you should enter for Disc 2 is VOB ID 2
no probs helping as I remember the first time I did this ;)

Damn this is really hard.
First. Using the first part of the guide with just simple merging of all the vobs I couldn't figure out how to edit the new IFO to make it work. Since the guide doesn't look anything like my IFO.
Second. Using the second part of the guide having a double DVD.
I get error when trying to create new IFO. Error: "No vob units found in vob file's"
I will try both things over again :-(
MackemX
8th July 2004, 22:22
you only need the 2nd part of the guide for what you want to do
http://users.pandora.be/rudy.stremersch/joinclip.html#joindbl
basically rename the VOB files for the 2nd DVD
VTS_01_001.VOB
VTS_01_002.VOB
VTS_01_003.VOB etc
then open VTS_01_001.VOB in Vobedit and click Menu/Join clips
input 2 as the VOB ID and process it
once it's finished you will have files in the destination folder
VTS_01_1.VOB
VTS_01_2.VOB
VTS_01_3.VOB etc
these need renaming to start after the files from Disc 1 and then put these into the Disc 1 folder
something like
VTS_01_1.VOB (Disc 1)
VTS_01_2.VOB (Disc 1)
VTS_01_3.VOB (Disc 1)
VTS_01_4.VOB (Disc 2)
VTS_01_5.VOB (Disc 2)
VTS_01_6.VOB (Disc 2)
you can then create IFO's with Ifoedit or process with Ifoedit and strip any audio/subs streams

Thats exactly what I did. But since
Disk one files is:
Vts_02_1.vob
Vts_02_2.vob
Vts_02_3.vob
Vts_02_4.vob
Vts_02_5.vob
Vts_02_6.vob
Vts_02_7.vob
Vts_02_8.vob
Disk two is:
Vts_02_001.vob
Vts_02_002.vob
Vts_02_003.vob
Vts_02_004.vob
Vts_02_005.vob
When putting the vobs in the same folder I have to rename the vobs adding at lease one zero in front og the Vob names in disk one. And for some reason it doesn't accept that
MackemX
8th July 2004, 22:33
leave disk 1 as it is as you must rename the processed disk 2 files back to normal
Disk one :
Vts_02_1.vob
Vts_02_2.vob
Vts_02_3.vob
Vts_02_4.vob
Vts_02_5.vob
Vts_02_6.vob
Vts_02_7.vob
Vts_02_8.vob
Disk two is:
Vts_02_001.vob - continue on from disk 1 so it's Vts_02_9.vob
Vts_02_002.vob - Vts_02_10.vob
Vts_02_003.vob - Vts_02_11.vob
Vts_02_004.vob - Vts_02_12.vob
Vts_02_005.vob - Vts_02_13.vob
I'm not sure that VTS_02_13.VOB will be accepted by other DVD program but Ifoedit will still process them :)
thats one big DVD as each VTS will be 1GB :D

Did as you said.
Still having troubles with the new IFO files. Did as decribed here: http://ifoedit.wh.fr0zen.com/createifo094.html
But they don't take into account for instance the pop up about re.saving the BUB-fils when saving the IFO's.
What are the BUB files anyway ?
What I did was specify languages audio streams and subpictures as decribed. I got so far as making the ifo file able to play the movie up until entering the data contained in the merged Vobs (The Vobs from DVD-TWO). It's very strange it knows the exact time of the merged movie but as soon as your go beyond the 2hours which is DVD-One nothing is played back.
I'm pretty lost
The Files after merge (This actually after me giving it a last try by joining all files using the VobEdit/Join Clips option. That's why one Vob got shrinked away):
VIDEO_TS.BUP 6.144
VIDEO_TS.IFO 6.144
Vts_02_0.bup 116.736
Vts_02_0.ifo 116.736
Vts_02_1.VOB 1.073.362.944
Vts_02_2.VOB 1.073.299.456
Vts_02_3.VOB 1.073.235.968
Vts_02_4.VOB 1.073.633.280
Vts_02_5.VOB 1.073.721.344
Vts_02_6.VOB 1.073.643.520
Vts_02_7.VOB 1.073.647.616
Vts_02_8.VOB 1.073.635.328
Vts_02_9.VOB 1.073.614.848
Vts_02_10.VOB 1.073.387.520
Vts_02_11.VOB 1.073.518.592
Vts_02_12.VOB 76.494.848
Here's screens of the original IFO and the new genreated IFO after I edited it as decribed in the guide.

ooops, my fault :o
I told you to rename them to VTS_02_x.VOB when it should have been VTS_01_x.VOB as I didn't pick up that you had mentioned your new files as VTS_02_x.VOB in a previous post
you don't have to use the join clips option but you can now try changing all the 02's to 01's and create some new IFO's again
you can also do a quick check, open one of the Disc 2 VOB's in VOBEdit and make sure that it's ID is 2
as for the save BUP file popup, it's ok to overwrite it as it's just a backup of the IFO file
In case it may help:
The new PgcEdit 0.3.0 beta has automatic functions to import a titleset and let it play after any title. Although this function is originally designed to add an 'insert disk 2' still frame at the end of a title, it may be used to merge a full featured title with chapters as well.
You may even try to import the original VTSM menus too, but this may require some work to adjust the jumps (the titleset number will likely not be the same).
Download beta here (http://home.tiscali.be/debie.roland/pgcedit/beta/pgcedit_0.3.0beta.exe).

76.494.848 Vts_01_12.VOB -- Vob_ID in last navigation pack : 13
Same problem. Playback works up until entering vobs from old disk two.
That is playback stops when entering Vob 8. Tried playing the Vobs manually one by one. They all play fine. However Vob 8 has some problems if you try to skip forward. Then it just stops playing. Perhaps there is something wrong there ?
Will try just merging the clips on disk two and assigning them Vob_ID 2 again :-)

UPDATE:
Did as you explained earlier:
rename the VOB files for the 2nd DVD
VTS_01_001.VOB
VTS_01_002.VOB
VTS_01_003.VOB etc
then open VTS_01_001.VOB in Vobedit and click Menu/Join clips
input 2 as the VOB ID and process it
once it's finished you will have files in the destination folder
VTS_01_1.VOB
VTS_01_2.VOB
VTS_01_3.VOB etc
these need renaming to start after the files from Disc 1 and then put these into the Disc 1 folder
something like
VTS_01_1.VOB (Disc 1)
VTS_01_2.VOB (Disc 1)
VTS_01_3.VOB (Disc 1)
VTS_01_4.VOB (Disc 2)
VTS_01_5.VOB (Disc 2)
VTS_01_6.VOB (Disc 2)
Same result as before. Playback stops when entering Vobs previously from DVD TWO. This meaning when entering Vob 9.
The files now:
1.073.451.008 Vts_01_1.vob -- Vob_ID in last navigation pack : 1
1.073.268.736 Vts_01_2.vob -- Vob_ID in last navigation pack : 1
1.073.405.952 Vts_01_3.vob -- Vob_ID in last navigation pack : 1
1.073.299.456 Vts_01_4.vob -- Vob_ID in last navigation pack : 1
1.073.455.104 Vts_01_5.vob -- Vob_ID in last navigation pack : 1
903.489.536 Vts_01_6.vob -- Vob_ID in last navigation pack : 1
1.073.647.616 Vts_01_7.vob -- Vob_ID in last navigation pack : 1
4.593.664 Vts_01_8.vob -- Vob_ID in last navigation pack : 1
1.073.559.552 Vts_01_9.VOB -- Vob_ID in last navigation pack : 2
1.073.618.944 Vts_01_10.VOB -- Vob_ID in last navigation pack : 3
1.073.332.224 Vts_01_11.VOB -- Vob_ID in last navigation pack : 4
1.073.586.176 Vts_01_12.VOB -- Vob_ID in last navigation pack : 5
71.960.576 Vts_01_13.VOB -- Vob_ID in last navigation pack : 6
Checked all Vobs manually and they all play back flawlessly.
I'm just about ready to give up :-( I have no idear what I'm doing wrong ?
Any other way to do this ?

if you have nero recode merge the two titles http://www.doom9.org/mpg/recode2-mmo.htm Merge Titles feature is at the bottom of the page. or you can use dvdshrink in re-author mode but you will get a slight pause at the merge.
Note: i think your problem is that the joined titles are bigger then 9GB and that's way it stops playing. (i can be wrong)

Does the MERGE feature of Nero Recode also make a IFO file that enables playback of all the Vobs ??

Thanx for all you help guys.
But I give up.
I tried everything you recommended.
File names, Nero Recode 2, DVD-SHRINK and of course IFO/VOB-EDIT. Nothing worked.
I guess the only thing that would work would be using DVD-Shrink and compressing the vobs to stay within the 9GB limit. But that's not an acceptable solution.
However there must be someone out there having encountered the same problem:
Wanting to encode a double DVD to Xvid in same average quality
I would sure love to here from those guys as I have no idea how to go about that ?
Thanx again for all help

Why don't you try PgcEdit?
If you don't need to merge the VOBs (ie if a little pause between the original title and the merged one is acceptable), then it has the function you need... in just two mouse clicks!

hmm ok I will try it
Any tutorial out there for this program. I don't seem to be able to open the DVD's in the program. Nothing happens if I choose open DVD and select the folder I ripped it in. I ripped the DVD's with DVD-decrypter in IFO mode.

You must have a complete DVD structure to use PgcEdit. Try ripping in File mode. And be sure to select the VIDEO_TS folder.
(If still nothing, try to load directly from the DVD drive: Although you will not be able to save the changes, it's a good test to verify PgcEdit is correctly working.)
Then use the PgcEdit 'Import Title Closing Clip' function (in v0.3.0 beta) to merge the new titleset.

to do what you want to do, you do not have to merge the vob's of the two disc. just open GKnot and under the ripping tab open DVD2AVI open disc one then ADD disc two and you will see them "merged" if you slid the scroll bar. then save project(demux your audio too)then open you .d2v file.
or you can try Frameserving
ps don't give up on Ifoedit,PgcEdit,Vobedit,VobBlanker or TitleSetBlanker this are all powerful tools.

you could try shrinking them first and then joining them
it will be a lot quicker and easier to join them when they are smaller :)
just set the percentage in each DVD to whatever you would if you were processing the whole DVD as one

I think you only forgot to save the DVD IFOs after the operation. The macro will copy the VOBs, but the IFOs are still in memory. Just use the File/Save DVD menu.
If your original movie is 2 hour 1 minute, then what you see in the IFOs is OK: thoses IFOs are the original ones! The rest, including the table in VIDEO_TS.IFO should be updated when you save the DVD.

What's wrong?
Here is what to do, step by step.
First, verify that the "Expert Mode" option is not checked in the Options menu, or you may loose some messages (like Quit confirmation when the DVD is not saved).
1) Open the original DVD.
1') Just to be sure you start with the original IFOs, select "File/Restore Backup", and reload the DVD in the editor. If what you say is correct, you should NOT see a requester saying that there is a mismatch between the number of titlesets stored in the VMG IFO and the sets on disk!
1'') This is not needed, but will help understand if there is a problem: select the "Utilities/Title Play Map Table" menu: you should see your original titles. Cancel.
2) In the left pane, select the PGC of the title after which you want to play the new titles (Title 2). In your illusrrated example above, you did that correctly.
2') Please note: Title 2 is the LAST title in your original DVD.
3) Select the "Macros/Import Title's Closing Clip" menu, and fill in the options you want. You did that correctly. Press OK.
4) When asked what to do with the VOBs, select "Copy them" or "Move them". (Note: if you are REDOING the import, then you may select "Don't import VOBs": they are already in the target folder.)
5) When the VOBS are copied, select the "File/Save DVD" menu. You forgot this step in the example (see the "*" in the titlebar of your illustration?). Do not use the "Save IFOs as" option!
5') Not needed: return to "Utilities/Title Play Map Table": you should see the new title(s) appended at the end of the table.
You should also see the new Title PGC (Title 3) in the left pane. In your 'finish screen' illustration, it is there. Correct!
5'') Test-play the DVD. Go to the end of Title 2: the new Title 3 should play.
That's all.
I tried this procedure again here, and all is working fine.
I don't understand why you are in trouble...

@ sweetness
Thanx for the guides looks like something I could figure out.
However one more question. Read that DGindex aka DVD2AVI has trouble determining if source is progressive or interlaced. Should it be very noticeable in DGindex if source is interlaced ?
Problem is that DGindex says interlaced and AutoGK found the source to be progressive and I can't see interlacing when previewing with DGindex.
Again thanx so much guys for helping :)

@r0lZ
WOW PgcEdit looks impressive everytime. about the Import title closing clips. Is it possible to have a play till next chapter button is pressed or any other remote button option? and/or if i use the display still time forever can i add a BOV to it(lets say i want to make a slid show)i just have no time to test these out to see if these work. but still impressive.
@nightrhyme
it has been a long time since i did divx movies try reading nickyguides (http://nickyguides.digital-digest.com/interlace.htm).

Well, looks good. What is the problem?
You now have a new title (title 3). The new title should play when the original title (title 2) has finished playing. And you can compress them with ie. DVDShrink with a constant quality. That's what you wanted, no?

Title 3 does not start playing after title 2 has finished.
No I wanted one IFO file that controls the playback of the whole movie. So when the ifo file is loaded it starts playback of the entire movie (3 hours and 11 minuets). AutoGK would then accept all the Vobs as one big DVD and then encode.
@sweetness
Thanx will check out the guide.
For some reason the preview in DVD2AVI seems to run at double speed. Is it surposed to do this ?

Yes, it is. :)
You need only set the still time to infinite, and use another function I have implemented (not yet available in last beta), that allow to use the Next Chapter button to skip to the end of the title, and execute the post commands. Works with stills, too.
It is already possible to use that trick by manually setting the NextPGC number to be equal to the current TTN PGC number, in the Edit PGC dialog.
On BOV: You will need to use an authoring software that allow to add BOV to your video (remember that PgcEdit is not able to deal with VOB files), and do the necessary command edits yourself (setting LinkTailPGC in the BOV button will have the same effect as the Next Chapter button trick).

Title 3 does not start playing after title 2 has finished.
Maybe you are discovering an unknow bug. Could you please send me the original IFO files (a zipped PgcEdit_backup) so that I could see what's happening?

Sorry. I misunderstanded you. But remember what i was saying:
If you don't need to merge the VOBs (ie if a little pause between the original title and the merged one is acceptable), then it has the function you need...

Just click on the Profile button below my post, and you'll find my address. (Don't want to write it here to avoid spam.)
