My first post so go easy guys. Have read newbie section and can't find this topic covered. I am trying to digitally back up my vhs collection and encountering problems with some avi files.
Put through AVI codec they have no entry sign and no codec is listed ( yv12 = unknown, VFW not ok ).
What is VFW and why is codec not found?
Movie plays fine in WMP ( xp ) and when file is checked it uses Xvid codec but AVI don't find it.
Please help , beginning to tear my hair out.
I am not an experienced pc person but can get round the basics ok.
Have written many dvds ok using TMPGenc and authoring but these remain a mystery. Can they be written successfully as they are or am I screwed?

Thanks for your valuable time

Eric

well, honestly i do not fully see where your problem is! do you have problems reencoding the files? where does your avi come from - it sounds as if you captured it, but what software and which settings did you use?

the fourCC 'YV12' is used by xvid, divx and a couple of other codecs, usually when copying from DVD, not when capturing!

vfw is Video For Windows, one kind of video wrapper windows uses. the other one would be wdm... do a google search if you want to know more about those!

cheers

Thanks for the info Steve.
These AVIs that dont work came from the net and are encoded with DivX but for some reason AVI Codec will not find it , giving me an eye symbol with a non entry sign.
I am very much an apprentice at this ( DVD writing ) but am willing to learn. Have read all the guides and printed many off , Paddy's guide was the one I have based my writing on.I have used successfully TMPGEnc and DVD author after analyzing files with AVI codec. Most write successfully. However TMPGEnc does have a habit of writing an .m2v file that is not the same length as the video clip , sometimes by as much as half.
Please help this is doing my head in.

Eric
