interlaceing issues with pinnacle studio 8/xvid

Got a cheap mini DV camera and to my surprize the file sizes are way huge. Been trying to use PS8 to convert to xvid and mp3 128 but have run into bad interlacing artifacts. Slow moving scenes look pretty good but fast motion gets bad horizontal lines in it. I can't find a deinterlace option. I did some searching and I don't know if my video is mode 1 or 2 or how to use scripts. Help please.

File sizes for DV are always huge. ~4 min per GB.

The field order for DV is BFF, wheras most other stuff is TFF. If the xvid was originally from MJPG or similar, then the field order will be wrong.

You need to use VirtualDub (or somthing similar) to read the xvid, field swap, and encode to DV (or back to xvid). VDub will only work DV with type2, but there are free type1/type2 converters available.

You are talking about interlacing artefacts. You may encode your video interlaced, but then it will look good on interlaced devices only (TV). For playback on a PC monitor you should deinterlace the video. Have a look at the "DV to DivX" guide in the sticky threads of this very forum; simply replace the DivX codec by XviD.

if you want to use VirtualDub the easy way to find out if your files are type one is try and open them if it works its type two if not you get an error mesage VFW (discussed elswhere in the forums)

if you dont want to convert your files to type 2, try installing the following

Ooops. Sorry, I misread your original post.

I thought you wanted to go XviD -> DV :stupid:

bjorn toulouse, is the codec you mention a VFW codec capable of handling type1 files? I thought that VFW codecs were exclusively type2?

firstly I'm pretty new to this and suffering from thread and guide fatigue :)

I was trying to load type one dv files into Vitualdub, and got the vfw error, I nosed about the forums and followed a link to type 1 -> type 2 converters. Now from what I read, the codec dosent convert the files it mearly fools aplications into thinking its type two. I installed it opend up virtual dub and hey presto. Since I have had it installed all my dv files go straight into VDub with no problems. I'll have a nose around and see if I cant get a link to the documentation on it.
