Weird Encoding Artifacts

I have used both CCE and TMPG before, but never had this problem. I have encoded a 4 min movie that plays fine in Windvd, but when I try to play it in Media Player Classic I get smearing color arifacts like a bad Divx. When I try to play it in Powerdvd it stutters like crazy. I have tried to encode it with both CCE and TMPG and result is the same. I have tried with both a uncompressed avi as source and a HuffYUV compressed avi. I'm encoding in CBR 8000 kbits/s. I can't understand what might be the problem. Anyone have a clue?

What is Your original source?
Do You use the standard settings in the encoder?
Did You tried Media Player Classic or VideoLanClient for playing your movie?

You can also use VideoLanClient for encoding Your movie. VLC can only encode in CBR. Use the streaming function in this player. Choose MPEG2 and 8000 kbps with MP2 Audio and save the stream in a file.

The original source is uncompressed avi straight from Adobe Premiere and I use the encoders standard settings. With Media Player Classic and get smearing artifacts and VLC plays the clip for a couple of seconds, then stops while the progress bar keeps on moving.

Notice the smearing on the soda can in Media Player Classic. It is even worse in other scenes. This sample seems to stutter instead of freeze in VLC and it seems to play fine in Powerdvd although the whole encoded movie stutters in many parts. The clip is also too dark when you play it in Media Player Classic and VLC.

TMPG autodetects the source as interlaced although it is progressive. Could it have something to do with that? This sample is encoded with the progressive flag checked in CCE, 16x9 and zigzag. All other settings are default. I have also tried to encode it as both interlaced an non-interlaced in tmpg.

I'm beginning to wonder if this could have something to do with the color conversion. I noticed that if I render the Adobe Premiere project to Morgan MJPEG the picture is too dark and have weird encoding artifacts. It looks good if I use uncompressed avi or HuffYUV but when I encode the huffyuv or uncompressed avi to MPEG2 using either TMPG or CCE I a darker picture and encoding artifacts. The mpeg2 looks good in Windvd though. When I export the movie uncompressed from premiere it is RGB24. Should I somehow convert the colors before encoding it to MPEG2?

The encoding artifacts only show up in Media Player Classic. If I encode the clip with TMPG I get stutters in Powerdvd but if I encode with CCE it doesn't stutter. Whichever encoder I choose, it always looks bad in Media Player Classic and looks good in Windvd.

I guess it could be an error in Media Player Classic's Mpeg2 decoder, but I haven't seen it on any other dvd I've played.

The right image is the image in windvd and the left is the image in MPC. Notice the green smudge and the red colors bleeding over to the yellow color. It is much more apparent when it is moving. The lower picture should be completely red, but a black object has just passed over it leaving this smudge.

Well, it really looks like a decoder problem in Media Player Classic.
