I didn't really followed all new about HD. And now I got interested. One guy showed me the link to KiSS press release: KiSS Technology and DivXNetworks Partner to Develop DivX Certified DVD Player Optimized for HDTV (http://www.kiss-technology.com/?p=news88&v=press).
The DivX Certified DVD player from KiSS Technologies will offer the additional ability to playback high-resolution DivX videos optimized for HDTVs. The player will enable DivX users to archive high-definition broadcast content on their PCs and easily playback DivX video encoded from high-definition on HDTVs.
How "high-definition" will it be? Does it mean that DivXNetworks will give their answer to m$'s WMV HD by saying "DivX HD"? Would be great! :)
Or do I missing the whole point of this press release? I did a quick search and didn’t find any info. Any comments about it?

Well you can already encode HD in divx xvid or whatever codec.
HD is 720p (1280x720 progressive) or 1080i (1920x1080 interlaced)
However DivX HD won't be the next HD DVD standard, only WMV9 and another codec I cannot remember (H264 one I think).
But that won't stop manufacturers to have DivX HD support ;)

Yep,
Generating Mpeg4 high-def encodes from a suitable high-def source is well worth the effort.
Unfortunately, after reading Sigma's chip-set documentation/press releases, it's difficult to ascertain what the maximum supported Mpeg4 image pixel frame size will be or what the maximum supported FPS will be!
Sigma has detailed the following: -
MPEG-2 MP@HL (720p/1080i), MPEG-4 ASP@L5* (720p) and Windows Media® Video (WMV9) MP@ML (720p) video decoding. So to me it looks like the max frame size will be 1280x720.
However, using the expression "p" (to describe the FPS) is not very helpful. My gut feeling is that just 30fps will be supported but I'm praying for 60fps :)

That is not what I was thinking about. I know I can encode HD with any codec. I just don't have HD videos now. And I know about H.264 from 'MPEG-4 Information' sticky. ;)
I was thinking about the times before HD DVD. I was wondering about DivXNetworks doing the same things as m$. Like selling DivX HD movies on DVDs and having HD hardware support. I don't think I would buy m$ stuff. I really hope I will not. But DivX HD sounds very promising. :) And if DVD player will be able to play "high-resolution DivX videos" then it should be able to play all my XviD encodes, shouldn't it? That's why I am asking about plans of DivXNetworks on HD (before HD DVD) market (if there will be any).

Qpel, no! It's almost as if Sigma don't recognise the existence of Qpel.
AAC-HE. Well the player/firmware won't crash. And if my 2 year old Sigma Xcard is anything to go by, AAC-HE sounds great!

divx5 is mpeg-4 as xvid, the sigma designs player will decode ANY mpeg-4 content (high def or not), therefore you could already for example create a 720p 3ivx encode, place it in .avi (with dx50 fourcc) or .mp4 (as the sigma firmware will support the .mp4 container) and play it on this player
thats the nice thing about an open standard, like mpeg-4: the whole power is not concentrated to one company ;)

It would be nice to think that this is one of the reasons we've been kept waiting?

I'm still not convinced about this!hm on the chip description site its says the chip supports mpeg-4 asp@l5, with the exception of gmc. so this would mean that qpel is supported :)

However, I've not seen Qpel support confirmed or even mentioned within the Q & A's posted on other forums!
I find this to be quite odd given that in the past, support for Qpel on Sigma chip-sets was such a hot topic. With this in mind, I would have thought Sigma would have shouted Qpel support from the roof-tops but... no!
But if somebody can provide information to the contrary, I'm all ears!
