XBox and Media Center

after reading what xbox media center can play which almost everything and after xbox becoming cheaper i really want to buy one but only one thing stop me which is the size of hdd of xbox (8gb).......
my question is: can i run my media from storage device connected to xbox via USB like HDD of others or just through CDs or DVDs?
any one know anything about it can answer me

I have modded my xbox and upgraded the hard drive. I loaded about 100 of my personal dvd backups onto the hardrive usually in xvid/ac3 mkv format. They all play fine. XBMC is still missing support for some of mkv features but I'm sure they will add it eventually.

Back on topic, I don't have any luck playing media off of my dvdrom as it is a tomson drive and doesn't like CD-R. XBMC is also picky with my DVD-R's but I think that could be worked out also. XBMC supports samba share which allows me to use my hard drives and dvd-roms in my pc for external storage.

edit: you'll want a router and to leave your pc on while your sharing thru your network

Did you try it with subtitle and which type you used.......
they said vobsub works also......

i wander about HDD connected via USB port ,
does XBox with XBMC support it or not........

and how i can upgrade the HDD of the XBox, is their any sites sell it with that features.......

I'm pretty sure support for USB hard drives isn't in xbmc or will even be considered in the future. Xbox only has USB 1.0 anyway.

As far as upgrading the internal hard drive... this is no problem if you have some hardware experience. Go see http://xbox-scene.com for information on how to mod your xbox.

Yes, there are places that will sell premoded xboxs. If you have the money this is the way to go. http://www.friendtech.com actually sells a premoded xbox that has upgraded hard drive, memory and cpu.

you can stream files from your PC harddisc using SAMBA shares, works really perfect for me you also could stream via VLAN and/or share your Drives.

its great to watch movies+subs,all sort of options to get it the way you like:)

Xbox is the ultimate media centre!!
I stream all my music and movies using SMB.
Have heaps of Xvid and Divx backups on my 120 gig xbox hdd.
www.xbox-scene.com is by far the best site for anything xbox.
I was lucky enough to get a Samsung drive which is the most compatible with media.

i use nero to burn a few 1.4gb and 2gb+ divx files. i selected "force dvd video" in nero

when i go to play it in xbmc, i can see the folders but cant see the *.avi fles (these files are ~1.4gb). is this because the xbox doesnt support large files?

if i dont select "force dvd video" in nero the xbox wont see anything, not even folders

using UDF/ISO mode wont help because nero says iso wont support files >2gb

does anyone have an xbox and has experience burning xbox divx dvds?

you can stream files from your PC harddisc using SAMBA sharesIt even works with Macs (a colleague of mine backs up his XBox games on a FireWire drive attached to his Mac - but he also has an 80GB HD in his XBox)

*edit* you have to connect your XBox via LAN not USB

dont worry i figured it out. its cause xbox udf doesnt support filesizes over 1gb...
