View Full Version : Transcoding the Mpeg Video in Vobs and the result it has on chapters

I've been trying to find an idiot proof method to make a high quality backup of a DVD9 to a DVD5. I tried a few pieces of software such as DVD Shrink and Nero Recode and was quite unhappy with the quality result. I know I shouldn't expect miracles when it comes to reducing bitrate by 50% but the results were simply pathetic. I've decided to go the manual way using Tsunami Mpeg Encoder to re-encode at a lower bitrate.

I've demuxed the video, audio and subtitles from VTS_1 (That being the main movie) I then used a bitrate calculator and subtracted the size of the animated menus and extras, I planned only to re-encode the main title itself and leave the extras and others alone (They only took up 600mb anyway) I'm now re-encoding the movie at 3800kbps VBR in Tmpgenc and it's looking a HELL of a lot better than the filth DVD Shrink and Recode hacked up.

My main issue is the chapters, I know I'm doing something VERY wrong when it comes to trying to make the final compiliation. Obviously, I'm trying to maintain all the menus and extras so it's just like the original. After a re-multtplex the new vobs for the much smaller VTS_01, I simply dropped these new Vobs into a folder containing all the other DVD files (Minus the old vobs for VTS_01) I opened up the Video_TS folder in WinDVD5 and it played just fine, menus, extras, everything worked, except the chapters were scrabled taking the player to random areas of the disk.

I'm guessing this is something I have to fix using IfoEdit or VobEdit, but it really confuses me. Could someone point me towards a guide that I can use to correct this issue and move on? :)

never tried this, but when u created the new vobs did it also make ifo and bup files to? if it did then read the link below on how to use ifoupdate (post #4), if not then i suggest authoring in IFO Edit if you're dealing with a single PGC main movie (u will need to check the VTS_01_1.IFO in ifo edit to find this out). when authoring with ifoedit use ifoupdates save chapters feature to get celltimes.txt, and vobedit to demux the .sup files, for the movie load your new .m2v or .mpv and u may already have the audio demuxed, usually .ac3, otherwise use vobedit for this too, then use the link below to update.

I already have all the streams demuxed, I actually used DVD2DVDR to strip them all to a folder for me.

So I can use IfoEdit to load the existing DVDs information and append it to counter the altered Mpeg-2 stream? Okay, I'll look into that in the morning, thank you. :)

i'm not familiar with DVD2DVDR but ifoedit will only accept .sup files for subtitles, and not many programs demux to this.

and what u do is basically create a movie-only by authoring the main movie vts again, and then 'append' with ifoupdate. HTH clear some things up :)
