I found the reason for certain crashing XVID Movies!

Hey,

I found the source of the video crashes !

Looks like Intervideo's WinDVD MPEG4 Video Decoder (MP4VDEC.ax) takes over XVID encoded videos and causes them to crash, even if xvid is installed!

I have uninstalled WinDVD6 rebooted and none of my movies crash anymore.

But I do need WinDVD6, so someone needs to find a fix, or contact Intervideo.

They cant just hijack the movie (the FourCC was XVID on those movies)!

Try this in your %windir%\system32 folder or whereever the file "MP4VDEC.ax" exists:

regsvr32 /U MP4VDEC.ax

This unregisters the filter and XviD should take over the decoding of XviD files again. Other formats this filter was handling would not play after this modification. You have to repeat the action every time you install WinDVD.

Run CMD.EXE, go to the directory MP4VDEC.ax is in and do a regsvr32 /u MP4VDEC.ax there. That should fix it; I assume you don't really need the WinDVD MPEG4 decoder, but the other parts of it, right?

Yes I thought about unregistering that.. but then WinDVD won't probably work correctly.

Why does the WinDVD Codec takes honour the FourCC?

Maybe there's a way of modifying the order of the codecs ? So the XVID codec loads first or something?

You could change the merit of either the xvid directshow filter or the WinDVD directshow filter. The higher the merit the more likely the filter will be used. Try for example Zoomplayer (and go to options->filter control->management->registered filter manager) or RadLight Filter Manager (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=67687&highlight=radlight+filter+manager) to change the merit.

strictly speaking every mpeg-4 asp decoder should handle every mpeg-4 asp stream

now i wonder why the decoder crashes? propably because strange things like packed bitstream have been used? so what settings were used?
