DivX Codec - download

I need to install a DivX codec and I was wondering if anyone had problems with DivX 5.11 from DivX site? I heard somewhere that it contained spyware and people had compatibility problems and system crashes after installation.
Can anyone comment about your experiences? thanks,

its good but i got rid of the spyware thing.. and was all working well for like ages then suddenly says the gainsoftware cant be found... then i cant even re install coz it still says no gain software installed .. duno why..

but otherwise its pretty good

there is also a totally free free version of the codec (with no Adware), use that one if all you want to do is watch videos.

Really? Where´d you get that from? It´s written all over the site. But it´s "adware", not "spyware". Spying includes being secret about it.

Beside that, I see no reason not to use DivX - working fine for me.

I need the codec to convert my DivX movies to VCD. When I try to do it with AVI2VCD and TMPGenc I am getting the error that decompressor is missing for DIV3 files.

StephanV, what do you mean by free version of the codec? Are you referring to DIVX5.11 version which can be downloaded from DivX Networks web site? I know that Pro version is not free, but normal 5.11 version is free I believe. Are you referring to that one or there is another one? Let me know if you have the link if you are referring to something else. thanks.

Instead, you could download the "Standard DivX Codec" which is found on their download page (www.divx.com/divx) directly underneath the DivX Pro feature table....I am getting the error that decompressor is missing for DIV3 files...Then your source is DivX 3, not DivX 4 or 5, and it is not a product of DivX Networks. You'll find DivX 3.11 alpha on Doom9's Download page.

Yes, that´s probably what he meant. The Standard version has everything you need to decode, AFAIK, though not everything you (might) need to encode. (i.e. no fancy stuff)

DIV3 is actually "DivX :)", the hack of MsMpeg4V3. It´s decoded by DivX as well, of course, though there´s a separate codec available too.

Thanks guys, I installed DivX 3.11 Alpha and it worked fine. I'm not a big fan of DivX, have not gotten into it yet I guess.

One question out of curiousity... for the set top players which can play MPEG4, with which codec do you need to encode the files? DIV3, DIV4 or DIV5? Or any of those will work on the set top player? I was also wondering how does the quality (video, sound) compares to SVCD and DVD? thanks.

Well most players can play back the the MPEG 4 stardard. So that means DIV3, DIV4, DIV5, XVID, FFMPEG, NERO, etc.. can be played back as long as they adhere to the MPEG 4 profile.

Now I don't own a DIVX player, so I don't know what they offer as far as sound playback options, but I imagine they can playback AC3 (in which case you lose no quality) and MP3.

DivX Low and High motion (DivX 3.11, or DIV3 and DIV4) will never comply with the MPEG4 standard. They are close, but just no it.
