View Full Version : Change Aspect Ratio in Vdub?
Is there a simple way with Vdub or Vdubmod to take an AVI or OGM file that is in the 16:9 wide screen format (made from a DVD in that format), and convert it to a 4:3 aspect ratio?
For instance, watching a video on my Pocket PC, the screen being small as it is, I'd like to fill the whole 320x240 (4:3) screen, and not have the black bars at top and bottom.
Any simple way to convert from 16:9 to 4:3?
After such a conversion, would I have to re-encode? Or could it be saved as a "Direct Stream Copy", rather than "Full Processing Mode", which would re-encode the whole movie?

there is, its called resizing and cropping (video-->filters) and it does require re-encoding.
but i dont understand you. you rather watch your movie in full screen and throw a lot of the video-image away while doing so, then have black bars on top and bottom of the screen?

But it IS logical. If he leaves the video uncropped, the resolution of the video file will be 320x180, and if he crop it, the resolution will be 426x240 cropped to 320x180. He will increase the playback resolution by 33%.

I don't mind letterbox on my TV or desktop PC. The Pocket PC is different--the screen is so small, I want the picture as large as it can get, to fill up the whole screen, not just part of it. Have you watched movies on a PPC?
Most movies do not have important things going on at the sides of the screen. In fact, they probably are careful about that due to the fact that it might be re-formatted to fit a TV screen. I doubt I would miss much of the "video image that is thrown away", while on the other hand it would be more pleasant to watch it a little larger.
By the way, when you apply that video filter for cropping and resizing, is there any kind of automatic filter to re-format 16:9 to 4:3, that automatically does the cropping and resizing for that format change? (I suspect I'm not the only person who has ever wanted to do that.) Or does one have to figure it out manually, how much to cut out of the width to make the ratio 4:3, then divide that amount by 2 and cut that amount from each side, while leaving the height intact?

I don't understand your point at all. I am trying to make the video the exact same size as my PPC screen, 320x240. That 180 height sounds about like letterbox (176?). The purpose of the cropping would be to get 320x240.

i tend disagree here, take this link (http://www.thedigitalbits.com/articles/anamorphic/aspectratios/widescreenorama2.html) as example. but it is your choice of course.

you will have to do it manually but it shouldnt be too difficult no?
crop off the black bars, resize to a height of 240 (correct the width for the difference between TV and PC if you still must) and then crop that to 320.
i guess it could be automated, but what is 16:9 and 4:3 anyway (when it comes to resolution) and how would you convert from one to another (there are several ways)? also for TV and PC they are different things
