View Full Version : why does size drop from using shrink before rb?

I used dvd shrink to compress some parts of the dvd such as the bonus features and left the movie uncompressed. Once I encoded that I used dvd rb to compress it even further with cce in order to get the rest of the dvd compressed with high quality so it can be burned. The problem is that the overall size of the dvd was smaller than me using dvd rb from the beginning, before cutting down the bitttrate with Dvd shrink. Is there a way that I can have dvd rb utilize all of the space because it was like a 100-200 mb smaller which would do a lot for the film quality.

I had a similar problem on a series of episode discs. Did you use Shrink to remove an audio track and did Shrink indicate there was Unreferenced Material on the dvd? If so, you also need to remove the same audio track from the Unreferenced Material.

Maybe you did remove audio tracks.

Shrink auto-removes the DTS track at least.

yeah I did remove the audio tracks I didn't need as well as compress the size of parts I knew I'd probably not watch as much as the actual film, ie menus and bonuses. Also shrink didn't mention anything about unreferenced materials.

You have to untick the audio tracks you want to remove before PREPARE. If you untick them just before rebuild (in 3 click mode) your disc will of course be that much undersized.

i did take out the audio before the prepare. I use shrink to first compress video i wouldn't watch like the trailers and such. Then i take out the audio to make more room. Then once thats done i rebuild the cd with shrink. With the outputted files i used dvd-rb to compress it to 4.3gb but it actually goes to like 3.8-4.0 gigs. If all that went to the film quality i would think it would make a big difference, so was wondering how i could fix that problem.

@fugit10:

You are undersized of just something around 300 MB.
READING THE STICKY THREADS written by our dear mod wmansir, you may easily find what should solve your problem...

Specifically, the suggestion is to use one of the following hidden settings (for advanced users, to add/change in the [Options] section of Rebuilder.ini):

TargetSectors=nnnn
CCETargetSectors=nnnn

Cheers,

Sir Didymus suggestion may do the trick. I use CCETargetSectors=2257500 and the ouput is always just a few meg under a blank DVD-R.

But I still think it might be related to an audio track, especially if some of the extras are in the same VTS as the main movie. You can try leaving audio tracks intact when using Shrink and then use DVD-RB to remove the unwanted audio.
