Capturing Video

Is it possible for me to capture segments on a DVD movie ? I wish to capture the last part in the movie Terminator 3 and make a video clip out of it. What do I need to do ? I have sonic DVD Burning software and Nero 6 ultra edition.

The typical way we extract video, audio, and subtitles from a DVD is by a process known as "ripping" -- which is the process of extracting and decrypting DVD information to one's hard drive. To do this, all you need is a DVD-ROM drive on a PC, and disk space. You have a DVD burner, I expect it will act as a DVD-ROM as well.

One can "rip" an entire disk, a particular program, a chapter, or a cell (which is a subset of a chapter). For more information on ripping, see "The Basics" at Doom9's website, and the ripping guides there.

This forum is for discussing the capture of analog video and audio to a PC, which we try to avoid doing with digital video.

While it is sometimes physically possible to extract analog signals from a DVD player, usually MacroVision (analog protection) complicates or prevents capture; and the quality is significantly worse than ripping.
