Audio Capture Conceptual Thoughts

There's a lot of talk here about video, but I find that audio is a lot more important most of the time. Are there any general rules or concepts that you guys use when you capture so you can get the best overall results? I've made about 80 tapes into DVDs over the last few months and the audio quality and volume change so much it's hard to always get it right on when I capture.

I try to get the volume as high as it can go before it gets to the point where it's only amplifying the noise.

Anyone else have any general tips or anything?

I agree with you..
After reading a lot of posts, and trying different set-ups, I know how to de-noise a video. But not the audio. My audio is always very bad and with a lot of noise. How do I get rid of it? Any filter/tip/etc?

I looked in the Capture FAQ, but I didn't find anything on audio processing.

I've used GoldWave and Adobe Audition to clean up the audio, IMO Adobe Audition does a better job. The idea in both programs is to search a short area where nothing but the noise can be heard and then use this to remove the noise from the whole clip. You can preview the effect so you'll notice if it removes any of the audio you want to preserve, then just adjust the strength to remove as much noise as possible while keeping all that you want to hear.

IMHO Boulder has it right on. Audition is easy to use for this and the program help file is pretty clear on how to do it. I don't capture the volumn at a overly high level. You can alway increase the volumn using Audition or with BeSweet. Most, if not all of the audio editing apps (sound forge, ect) do all of this.
