I have seen lot of topics about Xvid matricies, so here comes my quastion:
What is the (purpose of these) matricies? When to use them?

What is the meaning of "PSNR" (for example: PSNR = 48.60)? If it has higher number is it better?

Everybody prefers different matrices, I even made my own ones !!!


Also, the choice of a matrix depends on the source n' compression you aim for... ;)

Maybe use the sample pics (or better do your own tests) to find your favorite matrix !!!

Yes, everybody has his/her own preferences. I myself like Didée's SixOfNine and SixOfNine-HVS matrix for high to medium bitrates and below that the standard MPEG matrix (sharper) or Javor's 1CD-matrix (less blocking). There's also a matrix for anime/CG.

MGRip, the only way to really know which matrix you will prefer is to try a bunch of them.

Trim out 2 minutes of that dv cam, and pick out a few matrix's like sixofnine-hvs aka sixofnine-max24, hvs-best and mpeg and just do a simple constant q2 over them (q3 for sixofnine, because of the matrix) and compare the picture quality of those short clips.

Rely on the movie, not screenshots to pick your favourite matrix.

I myself like Didée's SixOfNine and SixOfNine-HVS matrix for high to medium bitrates and below that the standard MPEG matrix (sharper) or Javor's 1CD-matrix (less blocking). I just discovered 6of9-HVS for my medium to high bitrate encodes and wow, they look incredible. I highly recommend them since I've never seen such clean looking encodes... faces look cleaner, details look sharper, textures look more like original and at Q2 (with 3 bframes) it usually cuts the bitrate of the original mpeg2 in half.

Thank you guys for your help, I hve found the HVS-6of9 Matrix (max=24). But where is the DC cell for making the change?

The inter-matrix is the right column, the DC-cell is the one at the left in the top row.

The right matrix, instead of

...

should read

10_11_12_...
11_11_12_...
12_12_12_...
...

Too lazy to figure out and contact all people distributing them.
And it's not making *that* huge a difference, really.

After all, it's only a set of matrices.
