I tried searching, but can't find a definitive answer to this. Maybe there isn't one!

I've been successfully using DVD Decrypter / IFOEdit / Nero to backup my DVD-9s onto 2 DVD-5s. However, a friend of mine just asked for an explanation, and I realised just how complicated it is!

I haven't been keeping up with developments in this area in the past few months, so thought that maybe there is now a simpler program I could use? I tried DVDXCopy a while ago, but found it lacked much flexibility.

What do people use most often for this? I don't want to use any compression - I always go for 100% quality.

All advice is MUCH appreciated :)

Mark.

If you do a movie-only backup, use DVD Shrink in the Re-author mode. There is a button to set the start/end frames. For the first disk, trim the end of the movie until the size shown fits a DVDR. For the second disc, trim the beginning. You can trim by frames or chapters. Of course, using chapters is a more accurate way to split a movie.

If you want to keep the menus, try CloneDVD 2. It can trim chapters while preserving the whole DVD structure intact.

You can try DVDFab, it has the option to split DVD-9 to 2 DVD-5s.

For no-cost solutions, I use VOBBlanker that's very easy and powerful.

For dvd1 just blank (cut) more or less half the cells of the main movie and for DVD2 just only keep the same ones.
No quality loss, no menu loss, just half the movie on DVD1 and the second half on DVD2.

Some interesting follow-on: on DVD1 you'll be plenty of blank cell at the end of the movie...why don't use one of those to insert a "continue on second disc" clip? I use VOBBlanker for that. Then use IFOEdit to set the still time of the substitued cell to a right amount of second. Pusunplugged has a lot of clips.
