S-video 4 pin to 7 pin convertor?

Hi,

I used to have a Dell Laptop which had a 7 pin S-video output. I connected a variety of TVs using an adapter which connects to the 7 pin S-video on one end, and on the other end, there were three jacks. I could connect via component, composite and 4-pin S-video.

Now I have an IBM thinkpad t40p which has only a 4 pin S-video output. I would like to use this adapter still because I can connect my laptop to TVs without S-video via component/composite. However, it takes only 7 pin inputs. Is there a way to convert a 7 pin S-video (male) to a 4-pin S-video (male) to let me connect the adapter to the IBM laptop?

Any ideas on how to do this? Thanks!

You actually need a powered video converter, the reason you could connect to composite or normal (4-pin) s-video with an adapter is because the extra 3 pins of the 7-pin s-video plug were actually giving the composite signal. Your new IBM laptop does not output a composite signal so you will need an s-video to composite converter (and I have never seen one that didn't require external power - or one that output on one of those 7-pin s-video plugs). I am not really sure how component plays into this but I bet you would also need to do some power-required signal conversion to get to component from s-video and your Dell laptop was also outputting a component signal.

These converters are not terribly expensive (~$20).

Is there a way to just convert 4 pin to 7 pin using a cable solution? A powered solution is not very portable. Having component is not terribly important as long as I am able to use the other two devices of 4-pin s-video or composite.

Any ideas?

Thanks for the reply. I think I might purchase that adapter, but it's only for composite. If I were to get an 4-pin S-video (female) to component adapter (female), would it work with composite cables as well? Mainly the question is whether component cables are backwards compatible with composite cables.

IMHO, around 80% quality of the non converted s-video signal !!!

But I cant compare it to a natural composite signal, coz I have only S-Video output...

Guess its nearly comparable !!!
