Funny problem on a DivX back up.

Hi there!
I've made a back up of a DVD (X-men 1) with Dr. DivX and I got a funny problem at the beginning of the film.
The encoding was succesfull, that's not the reason, only when I play the final avi, at the presentation of the film, it come the image with a few pixels on the screen... It seems to be that when the movements are very fast, the encoding was not so good.
The rest of the film it is just very good.
Somebody have an answer for that?
In the encoding I add permanent subtitles too.
I used: DVD --> DVD2AVI --> VFAPICon --> Dr. DivX (16:9 Anamorphic, 2500 Kbit/s, 1 pass, mp3 160 Kbit/s, 48 Khz)

That is natural, since you choosed fixed bitrate encoding, divx codec will try to maintain the same compression ratio regardless of motion intensity or image complexivity. That leads to the effect you've just described. One solution would be to set the quantizer to a fixed value and the compression quality will be the same for the entire movie. However it is hard to calculate the compressed filesize in this way. Another way is to set a high averaging period. If you do that, the codec will still attempt to maintain the fixed compression ratio, however if you have a short high-motion part it will not decrease the quality so rapidly. You can also set the minimum and maximum quantizer, but then you should be aware that if you set the maximum quantizer too low the codec will be unable to compress the file to the specified datarate.

In my opinion, nothing really beats 2pass VBR encoding!

Sure it takes a lot longer to do but the results speak for themselves...

I agree.One pass can be helpfull if the source isn't that good.
but for dvd's(wich are the best sources you could get)2 pass is the best answer.the 5.0.2 or 5.1.1 i would recommend only for the latter it takes much longer than the firts if you wan't to have the best results

Yeah! I really would like very much to do a 2-pass back up of the movie... If Dr. DivX would let me! :angry:
I've tried to do that in the conditions I've mentioned before, and Dr. DivX crashed just right after the 1-pass...
I don't know if that is really the program or the problem is with the avi generated by VFAPIConv and VobSub together...
However, Dr. DivX needs inmediatelly an update. I said that already may times, but it seems that some people do not want to listen, and I'm not the only one with problems with Dr. DivX.

if i were you i should use avisynth to frameserve instead of VFAPI.
i would advice not to use that any more.An for dr divx I have no experience with that tool,so i can't give you any advice on that.would it be easier to use Gknot or autoGnk?I personaly don't use any conversion tools any more.i only use

Yeah! I know there are better programs going around or better ways, the fact is that if I pay for something, that must work...
I've already talk about it in many posts, as well as many others that have problems with Dr.DivX, and I know that many of the developers of DivX/Dr.DivX are members of this forum. They've promessed an update... but I am still waiting for...:o

But then, I can not add permanent subs. Well that's good to know. At least DivX will know where to improve their product.

As I may have mentioned before, I don't generate encodes with subs but I'm sure there must be methods of extracting them directly from the VOB's and then muxing them into a 2pass DrDivX AVI encode afterwards... in much the same way you can add extra audio tracks to an AVI.

Yeap! Of course, using AutoGK it is possible to extract the subs from the VOB (DVDx can do that too), but I think not more, As far as I could see, AutoGK new version, can not read IFO files any more, only subs from external files. Did you ever tried that?
However, The point is that I want to add subs in spanish, and my DVD has only German and English, so it make no sense to extract the subs from the original.

Well, finally I said: Ok, one more tool in my computer is not so bad... and I gave AutoGK 1.25 a chance. Nice tool, I must admit and quite fast on 2-pass encoding, the results are great. BUT, I have already find a bug!
I got a DVD with 4 subtitles, on the AutoGK list was:

English
Italiano
Espanol
Deutsch
No subtitle

But, actually, this order is wrong, it should be:

No subtitle
English
Italiano
Espanol
Deutsch

That's mean, if you select "Italiano" there gonna be "English" or if you select "Espanol" is going to be "Italiano" and so on...
Nice to realize that after 4 hours encoding, I've selected spanish subs and at the end I got a beautiful avi with... Italian subs. :scared:
Nice tool anyway, pitty I can not add permanent subs... or may be yes :confused:

So, I've tried to make others back ups with Dr. DivX, this time frameserving with Avisynth. It works definetly better than VFAPI, now I can, with Dr. DivX, use 2nd pass option and even file splitting.
I think something crash between: VFAPI & VobSub (For subtitles) and Dr. DivX... When VobSub is shooting the subs into the avi something happen, I was no able to split files and crashed after 1st pass.
Can somebody confirm that and say why?
