Hello,

The H-264 and the WWV9 (vc9) seems to share the choice of the final format; And the aod: its objective in the future.

AOD is now called HD DVD ;) There are different interpretations as to which codecs are allowed, and absent any publicly known specs that situation isn't going to change.

After my work, i made few investigations:



BLU-RAY

An HD-DVD format that uses a 405nm-wavelength blue-violet laser technology, in contrast to the 650nm-wavelength red laser technology used in traditional DVD formats. The rewritable Blu-ray disc, with a data transfer rate of 36Mbps, can hold up to 27GB of data on a single-sided single layer disc (compared to the traditional DVD’s 4.7GB capacity), which amounts to about 12 hours of standard video or more than 2 hours of high-definition video.
The Blu-ray format was developed jointly by Sony, Samsung, Sharp, Thomson, Hitachi, Matsushita, Pioneer and Philips, Mistubishi and LG Electronics


HD DVD

Short for high definition-DVD, a generic term for the technology of recording high-definition video on a DVD. In general, HD-DVD is capable of storing between two and four times as much data as standard DVD. The two most prominent competing technologies are Blu-ray and AOD


AOD

Short for Advanced Optical Disc, Blu-ray’s competing HD-DVD technology format. AOD and Blu-ray are similar in that they both use 405nm-wavelength blue-violet laser technology, in contrast to the 650nm-wavelength red laser technology used in traditional DVD formats. However, while Blu-ray has a storage capacity of 27GB on a single-layer disc, AOD has a storage capacity of 20GB on a single-layer disc.
AOD was developed jointly by Toshiba and NEC.


DVD

Short for digital versatile disc or digital video disc, a type of optical disk technology similar to the CD-ROM. A DVD holds a minimum of 4.7GB of data, enough for a full-length movie. DVDs are commonly used as a medium for digital representation of movies and other multimedia presentations that combine sound with graphics.
The DVD specification supports disks with capacities of from 4.7GB to 17GB and access rates of 600KBps to 1.3 MBps. One of the best features of DVD drives is that they are backward-compatible with CD-ROMs, meaning they can play old CD-ROMs, CD-I disks, and video CDs, as well as new DVD-ROMs. Newer DVD players can also read CD-R disks.

DVD uses MPEG-2 to compress video data.

Since AOD got the nod for HDDVD, everyone now calls AOD HDDVD instead. That hasn't stopped Sony, et. al. from forming their own group and pushing Blu-Ray. This is shaping up to be another Beta vs VHS war, but this time Sony has more support on their side. Sony also has a major movie and record label with which they can push their format. They learned from being burned over Beta. Expect them to win this time around.
