Encoding a DV file from avisynth script

ok, I want to render my own DV compatable avi's using something like virtual dub, with a avisynth file as my source.

Now, when I tell vdub to use the panasonic dv codec to encode, it works great, my dv program opens the file and sends it to the camera no prob.

The problem is the audio, tried saving it as PCM raw audio, 48khz, 16bit stereo, but when I put it into the camera, no sound on the tape.

What is the proper sound format to mux into the DV avi file?

Put VDub in Full Processing mode for the audio compression.
Next, go into the "select audio compression"

It should show up in VDub as:
"DV Audio -- NTSC"
"DV Audio -- PAL"

DV audio is different than raw pcm wav. DV Audio has a slighty higher bitrate.


If you don't see it perhaps your DV codec does not support that operation? I have the MainConcept DV codec and it shows up.

Ok it is not there, but I will install the mainconcept codec mabye that will help.

I was only using the panasonic codecs cuz it is a panasonic camera... but dv is dv I supose so I will try that... thanks..

Dam is it commercial ware.... Sigh... why is there no freeware software for DV??? or atleast very little.

I installed the mainconectp dv codec and no avail, it is not in my audio codec list...

You think that when I bought my $1300 camera, that it would have these codecs on the disc... but noooo they want you to use some peice of ! commercial software instead of avisynth and vdub... sigh...

I will defeat those propriatary ***... I will encode it using freeware software if it kills me.

PCM should work, but using VirtualDub you'll get something like a DV type-2 file, but without audio in the video stream. DV type-2 has audio in both, the video and the audio stream. You may want to try this: Use one of the free type-1/type-2 converters and convert the video you save from VirtualDub to type-1. Then upload it to your camcorder.
