I have some mp3 files that lay perfect in Winamp 5.01 but they dont on WMP9 - that is, they seem to play fine, WMP9 recognizes them, the slider keeps moving as during normal playback, but no sound is produced.

Can anyone tell me why (BTW - I have tried the volume control :D )

Someone said that they might be ogg files in the guise of mp3s, so I renamed one such file to .ogg and tried to use besweet to convert from ogg to mp3, but BeSweet choked up. I also tried to use BeSweet for mp3 to mp3 conversion to get a new copy of the file - but Be Sweet still chokes up.

Any ideas?

Thanx

Do they malcuntion only in WMP or in every DShow based player? MPC, bsplayer, zoom player.
Winamp afaik has its own playback routines and doesn't use dshow. Perhaps that's why they play there. Is there something like an about window in Winamp telling you what type of file it is?
What about foobar2000?

I'd load them up in Winamp, right-click the file in the playlist and select View File Info. Look over what pops up, that should help you get an idea of what format they're in hopefully. Ultimately you could always use Winamp's disc writer to convert them to uncompressed wav files then recompress to your desired format, although that'll hurt the sound quality in the end.

I checked File info for a few problematic files. Here is one of them

Size: 4734848 bytes
Header found at: 1488 bytes
Length: 295 seconds
MPEG 1.0 layer 3
128kbit, 11350 frames
44100Hz Stereo
CRCs: Yes
Copyrighted: Yes
Original: Yes
Emphasis: None

I notice, all files that do not play in WMP9 say yes at Copyrighted. Can I do something to get around that.

These are old files that I might have gotten off kazaa a long time ago. I may have about a dozen such files. I am in the process of cataloging and arranging my entire collection - summer project and I like WMP9s media library systema nd view so Id like to stay with that.
