Xvid MPEG Matrix ( space :-( ) for noisy TV capture ?

Hello,

because of space ( cca 4GB ) and slow CPU ( Celeron 600 )
I am forced ( until more money ) to capture directly
into Xvid.
I use 384*288 res (PAL) with fast XviD settings
( MSP 3-4, VHQ0, No BVOP ..)

What custom MPEG matrix do you recommend
to keep either quant or bitrate low ?

(Good signal can have a half or even 1/3 of
noisy signal bitrate)

If the signal to start with is noisy, try to buy a analog video procamp that you can roll off the hi end of the video signal. Videocraft made some years ago and I still keep them connected to my capture board.

Here is a case where analog is alway a better solution than digital after the fact.

If you are an elctronic hobbist, you sould be able build one for about $20.00 US.

Is it valid for TV capture too ?

Most TV channels ( house with common antenne ) is OK,
but just one with interesting documents is noisy.

I am not as well to made it, neither understand such hardware
well...

My background is off the air televiseion. So what you are saying is most of the stations are good but the ones you want the most are not.
In Europe all the TV stations are UHF. So what you need is a good high gain uhf yagi antenna, and there are many avalible in Europe, and if you don't live in a major city, a good UHF preamp should be added.

I use to import DX Antenna Company's products for just this purpose, and I did export them worldwide. The procamp that I posted about is a after the fact item, so its best to get your antenna system running as good as it could be.

I am afraid the only possibility is a preamplyfier.
But it is possible that a signal itself is bad, not only weak.

In fact I need not to make the signal better,
it is enough for me, so I am not going to buy it.

It just keeps bitrate too high to save false details,
or keeping bitrate as for good one causes compression artefacts.

Depending on the software You use for capturing You can try to use a Dshow-Denoise-Filter f.e. "dnr.ax" included in "ATV2000". Or You can use "FLY2000TV" with the included denoise-Filters. They can reduce the size of your final *.avi in a dramatical way.

@ALL: is it hard work to put the DScaler-Denoise-Filter (open Source) into a DShow-Filter (*.ax) to use it in other Applications?? Maybe someone can do it??? It's helpfull for everyone capturing analog from TV.

I use Leadtek 2000XP Expert TV capture
card with original Leadtek Winfast PVR
with WDM drivers on Win98SE. There is relatively
new Philips chip xxxxx ( not handy ).

I do not know about any other (free) SW
to work with it. ( Sb. wrote me DScaler cannot
work with it )

My SW itsel cannot do any filtering, or use DShow AX filters.
Note that My CPU would not probably be able to do
offline filtering.
