I have a HE-AAC audio file within an .mkv
I've managed to get the AAC file by itself with mkvextract, but I'm unable to actually do anything with it without getting errors.
Is there a plugin I need to do this in a program such as virtualdub, or do I need to download a program that specializes in converting AAC files to other formats such as mp3 or ac3? I've done some searching on Google and tinkering with BeSweet, but haven't found a solution. Any help would be appreciated.

Decode the AAC with FAAD: http://www.rarewares.org/aac.html
Encode the 2 or 6 channel wav with your AC3 encoder of choice.

Ok, I ran FAAD and turned my he-aac into a wav file, but it seems to have the same compatibility problems.
I put the file into besweet and tried to convert to ac3, but it didn't do anything when I hit go. The log popped up, as usual, but it doesn't even show anything in the log.
If I use the wav as the audio source in virtualdub and choose a compression method, it also gives me an error.

Not sure if I did the command right
besweet -core -input 18f.wav -output 18f.ac3
Error 58: Error : Unknown Input-File Format : "18f.wav".
Quiting.

Same error.
Interesting one when I use the aac as the input though.
A ton of errors flooding like so:
"Stream error : Sync found after ## bytes" with the ## varying
Then about halfway through:
fatal error. MAXFRAMESIZE not large enough.
Then a 'need to close' the program error with hip.dll
Are there any aac-specific .dll files I need in order to do this?

I just went through the same hell as you trying to decode this damn AAC format. In the end I found a little program called GraphEdit which did it. Get GraphEdit and the guide HERE (http://nickyguides.digital-digest.com/audio-extract.htm). Read through the guide as it will help you to understand how this un-user friendly program works, atleast it's not a command line prog:D One thing, before you run it and pull your hair out because the "Wave DEST" option isn't there, run the batch file that comes with it.
