View Full Version : DVDShrink: Quality of Backup Not So Hot

Here's what I'm doing: ripping the DVD with DVDDecrypt, then sizing it to fit on one DVD-R with DVDShrink. It shouldn't be a problem, and sometimes it isn't, but on some movies (such as Bowling for Columbine and The Big Lebowski) the quality is absolutely awful: the picture itself is fine, but fairly often it turns pixely, and the sound cuts out sometimes. When the sound comes back, it isn't in sync anymore, but then it fixes a few minutes later.
I initially thought that it was just a problem because the computer was doing something else at the time for whatever reason, but I have been restarting the computer before I backup the DVDs and have been getting the same problems... has anyone had this problem before? Any help would be much appreciated! Thanks!

Are you re-authoring it first to take out all the extras to give more room for the movie?

No, I generally only take out the other audio tracks, if there are any, to save room.

You'll usually get shitty quality below 70% ratio (more than 30% compression).
But it shouldn't make the sound stutters, maybe it's the media you're using.

More information please.
* What compression ratio did you end up using
* Did you watch the movie in a standalone player or on your pc?
* What media are you using. Please post media code. You can get it using dvdinfo pro.
* What burner are you using and at what speed did you burn the disk. Do you have any firmware hacks installed?

It almost sounds like bad media... Buy a quality name brand Re-Writable disc for testing... Reburn it and see what you get...

I'm not sure about the specifics of the media, but I know it's Fujifilm, so it may just be the media... I'll probably pick some up next time I'm at Best Buy, what brand is usually the most compatible?
Also, this problem occurs in the same spot on every DVD player -- however, on my friend's player, a very old one, it stops playback and usually puts the movie back a few chapters. On mine, it usually just gets pixelly for a second, and then fixes itself.

But through our website you can buy from our supplier direct... We use BeAll Brand exclusively for Computer Backups of critical data for our clients... and I use it for all my movies... Fantastic Stuff... Free Shipping... 60 Money Back Guarantee... and the price has come WAY down on DVD-R and DVD+R... But you should always keep a couple name brand RE-WRITEABLES around to test burn when having problems like this...

what is the difference between AutoGK and DvdShrink?
I just cannot find the difference. Which one is better?

Hi there Kortik, you cant compare AutoGK and DVD Shrink because they are for different purposes, and use completely different standards. Tip, see the discussions about mpeg2 vs mpeg4 for an idea about Shrink compared to AutoGK.

Geff,
Sorry to bother you...
I don't see on your site (posunplugged.com) a link to your media source. Evertime I try a page that heads me towards DVD-Media, it ends up being an empty page. Can you head me in the proper direction, please?
I'd like to try some BeAll media and I'd like to purchase from a reputasble distributor, especially one that offers free shipping.
Thanks...
Aason
