dvd2avi/mpeg2dec3 somehow changes the luma range. I know this isn't possible, but something is causing a change in the luma range somewhere.

Important note, I tried two AviSynth scripts. Using no color conversion in avs (1), or converting to RGB24 (2). Both resulted in the same brightness.
Any ideas? What is causing this change in the luma range?
