View Full Version : New DVDShrink like GUI for lxdvdrip, dvdbackup, etc.

Hi folks,

I recently completely removed Windows from my main computer to stay only with my fellow gentoo and I was quite disapointed with using DVD Shrink under wine (crashes, no working aspi, etc.).

I read about lxdvdrip on this board and learned how to use some of the backup tools used on linux and I thought it'd be nice to make a nice GUI for it (and/or other DVD backup related tools).

I just started this GUI stuff and wanted to know if some people here would be interested to join me in this task. I started to work with python/wxPython and I have to say that python looks like a very nice language to me.

As I have currently exams, the work will be stalled until july, but I'd be interested to know if this project is interesting people here (as users or developpers)

As you can see I'm not an artist so if someone would be kind enough to capture/make icons (I don't know if we can borrow the icons of DVDShrink or not) to put in the toolbar, please contact me.

The Icons in the toolbar mean:
1)Open Disc
2)Open Image
3)Open Files (or Open Directory)
4)Backup
5)Full Disc
6)Re-Author

Hi, I am interested to help of course, but have a very tense time problem atm (not only the upcoming exams but new work area soon).

I am not really familiar with Python though so i possibly cant help. But i guess some others can and would like to. :)

I'll try to aid on feedback whenever possible.

Thanks for this positive feedback.

As for python, you have to know that it is my very firs lines of code with this language. I though it'd be fun to learn a new language while making an useful tool. So if you want to learn as well (it's really easy, no variable types, simple syntax), don't hesitate to join.

I already prepared the preferences window where you can choose your source and target drive yesterday evening.

Do you have a better idea for the name of the GUI ?

Do someone have some icons for the toolbar ?

thanks,

I just wanted to know if you have had any progress with your GUI for lxdvdrip. I have not yet used the software and I have no experience with Python, but your project seems interesting. The single thing that turns me off about lxdvdrip is that it will not copy menus and special features, so I think it would be helpful to find a way to include them. Let me know what you think, people have been waiting for a Linux program like this.

I didn't made a lot of prgress lately because of the reasons invoqued before.
Unfortunately I don't know how we could do to keep the menus, but I'm quite sure it is possible because there are quite many tools available (the only problem is just their user-unfriendlyness).
I had a look at the k3b source code and it seems something was prepared to include a gui to shrink dvds inside it, so that it would be a nice idea to suggest this feature to the author of k3b (I did it already, but if there are more users that do it, maybe he'll consider making it on it's top priority list ;-).
In my opinion k3b would be the perfect tool where to include such a gui so I have to think if:
1)I continue my own project
2)I try to contribute to k3b
3)I wait until somebody does it inside or outside k3b

hehe
well there can be more than those 3 options mentioned BUT i think the 3rd point you mentioned is not the best option at all :)

i dont know anyone maintaining and caretaking for k3b but python has convinced me ever since superkaramba, and every modular piece of code is better than any integrated super bloat IMHO

I better ask, you mean Sebastian Trueg, or someone else?
Maybe one more email makes a difference for a priority list :P

That's my opinion too.

I don't think k3b is bloathed and I thought it would be nice to be able to benefit from the nice gui and burning functions it provides but you are right, when I was using windows I was not using Nero to transcode my movies... As you seem to be some python wizard, would you be interested into this project ?

He is the one I was talking about, but I'm not sure e-mail is the bes way to suggest for new features...
