View Full Version : I’ve produced a rhombus-like picture in VDubMod.

Hi, PROs.

There’s this NTSC mpeg-1 file I wanted to DivXize (not a bright idea, I know, but…) in WinXP, so I

1. found out the BitRate (639) for my file-size (262 MB)
2. opened it in VDubMod 1.5.4.1 (build 2178) that ships with AGK 1.00,
3. disabled the audio for now (because that’s the prime source of trouble in these situations),
4. added resize filters, resized and cropped to my satisfaction (determined by dimensions of things and people in the picture),
5. added DivX ;) MPEG-4 Low Motion compression, configuring it at keyframes every 30 seconds, Compression control at 76 towards Crispness, and Data Rate (determined previously) at 639.

During processing, VDubMod showed two moving pictures (left: original, right: resized) as usual. The finished video was like a rhombus, as if the frame was lying down like that indicated by the zeroes below, the ! marked parts are the parts of the previous and the next frames. The color in the frames were in horizontal stripes.

!!!!!!!ooooooooooooooo!
!!!!!ooooooooooooooo!!!
!!!ooooooooooooooo!!!!!
!oooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!

This occurred with my second, and third mpg-1 files too. I did this sort of stuff before, without a hitch, the only headache having been the audio. There’s no bug in the program, only one in my own head. What’s happening?

Regards.

What size did you crop your movie to? Make sure both the width and height (or at least the width) are multiples of 8 - if they aren't, it's likely for something like the above to happen.

Sorry for taking 5 days for this mail; for some reason I didn't get info that you've replied. Yeah, I didn't pay attention to this dimensions-restrictions.

But, tell me -

1. when I clicked Video > Compression > DivX;-)MPEG-4 Low-Motion the Format Restrictions panel in the Video Codec Information to the right said 'No known restrictions' - why is that? Why doesn't it say something like 'the dimensions have to be multiples of 8'?

2. Moreover, VDubMod's main interface showed the input and output (resized) videos during the dub process and the output picture showed no indication that this stinker was on the way. Why was that?

One anwer may be that it's not a perfect world. What is the other answer?

Regards.

Because it's up to the codec to inform VirtualDub of those things, which, with DivX;-) being a piece-of-crap hacked beta-MS-codec that (despite what it says) really isn't MPEG-4 compatible, obviously didn't happen. Why would you even use that thing for encoding today? DivX and XviD both surpass it with leaps and bounds, not to mention that both are real MPEG-4 codecs...

Because the input and output panes in VD show you the image before and after applying it's filters, but not the image the codec produces when it decompresses the file it produces - you'll get that when you open the resulting file in VD itself. So the codec has problems decompressing it's own files, but you'll only see that when you try playing them, not when creating them in VD.

Thanks very much.

I used DivX-4;-) Low-Motion because I read in a Nicky Page tutorial that it is the thing to do for MPEG-1 > MPEG-4 transcoding. Looks like it ia dated tutorial, though very good. But I'll use DivX 5.11, and post here if any further chastening occurrences take place.
